Biography

James Johnson was born in 1848 in Keighley Yorkshire England. He was the son of Joseph Johnson and his wife Sarah Spencer[1]

James married Mary Ann Davies, aged 16, in Victoria in 1872 [2] James’ parents are not named in the marriage records. Mary Ann’s parents were Isaac Davies and Mary Hunt. The witnesses were Hannah Rhodes (signed her name) James’ sister and Charles Davies (who signed with a x).

James Johnson was a quarryman as described on his death certificate. He died at the Melbourne Hospital after a stroke in 1916. [3] His parents were given as Joseph Johnson and Mary Sinclair. The entry was made by the hospital clerk.

Research Notes

I have researched extensively for James’ parents and come to the conclusion that his mother’s name in the death records is incorrect. As noted the report was made by the hospital clerk. I believe his parents were most likely Joseph Johnson and Sarah Spencer. Joseph and Sarah migrated to the Colony of Victoria from Keighley Yorkshire in 1857 on the Black Eagle. They travelled with their children Hannah 12, Sarah 3, Mary 5, James 8 and baby 1.[4] I have accounted for all the children apart from James. Joseph Johnson was a quarryman as was this James. They lived in similar areas of Melbourne suburbs. Further to that James’ first daughter was Sarah, Thomson-4079. There is no record of a marriage between Joseph Johnson and Mary Sinclair in the United Kingdom.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
