Biography

Eliza Johnston, also known as Elizabeth or Lizzie was born on 22 April 1871 in Gilford, County Down, Ireland, the daughter of William Johnston and Betty Ann Skillen.[1]

She was educated at Gilford No 1 Day National School, Gilford, County Down. 1875-?[2]

In 1891 she married Stephen Kelly in St Gobhan's Parish Church, Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland. He was a beamer in a factory [he takes cones of thread and organises them to make the warp ready for weaving - the beam is a large bobbin] living at Upper Seagoe, Portadown, County Armagh and she was living at Edenderry, Portadown, County Armagh. The witnesses were James Johnston and Ann Eliza Giffen.[3] Their children were

  2. Isabella Kelly.
  3. Sarah Jane Kelly.
  4. Mabel Kelly.
  5. William Kelly.
  6. Arnold Kelly.
  7. Stephen Kelly.
  8. Thomas Kelly
  9. Martha Kelly.

In 1901 she was living in Edenderry, Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland with her husband Stephen, a yarn beamer, and 2 living children Jane and Mabel. She was 27 years old and stated as Church of Ireland. The rest of the family were Christian.[4]

In 1911 she was living at 7 Watson Street, Portadown, Co Armagh with her husband Stephen who was now a linen winding master and their 6 children. She was 37 years old and the family were now all Christian Brethren.[5]

Eliza died on 21 Feb 1938 at 7 Carrickblacker Avenue, Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, aged 66 years, from cardiovascular sclerosis. She was married and a housekeeper. Her death was registered by her son Stephen Kelly of 7 Carrickblacker Avenue.[6]
