Biography

Younger was born about 1824 in Bibb, Georgia. He passed away about 1852. The information on John “Younger” Johnston is difficult to find. He married Rutha Mayfield in Smith County Mississippi 1848. There is a Alabama, Homestead and Cash Entry Patents dated 20 Oct. 1835. There is a Florida Homestead entry for Young Johnson in the Florida registry dated: Survey March 10, 1843. I don’t think this ever played out for John and Rutha, The Indian Wars that followed this date were bad. There is also a Residence listing for John in 1840 at Ward No 1, Bibb, George, USA. This is where his family is from. They had two children, John Johnston (1849) and Sarah Elizabeth Johnston (1852). John served in the Florida Indian Wars in the 1850’s. Rutha had moved back home with her parents during this time. John died in 1852 – 1853 after the birth of Sarah. Rutha is on the census of 1860 in Smith Mississippi with her children. Not much is known about this time but Rutha later remarried John Owen Moss in 1864. John Moss was 20 years older then Rutha. Rutha went on to have 4 more children with John Moss, 2 boys and 2 girls. They would have been half siblings to John and Sarah Johnston. Rutha received a War pension for John’s service after the death of John Moss in 1884. She is listed as Invalid and Widow, John Johnston is the name on the Pension file. Johns death details are none existent. All we can do is follow the records as much as possible. The story of John Younger and Rutha is sad. He died young and left 2 small children. This happened before the civil war but during the Florida Seminole Indian Wars. Rutha Continued her life the best she could, widowed at the age of 22. Life in Mississippi was most likely very hard. God Bless you both.
