Biography

Previously posted on Findagrave: Son of Phillip and Rebecca Jones. Etheldred Jones was ensign in Captain Hinton's company and was afterward known and Captain Jones. He served under General Greene and fought in the battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. His sword has been placed in the museum of war relics at Guilford Battle Ground.

Son of Phillp and Rebecca ( ) Jones. Etheldred Jones was elected ensign in Captain Hinton's company, and was afterwards known as Captain Jones. He served under General Greene and fought in the battles of Cowpens and Guilford Court-House.

His sword has been placed in the museum of war relics at Guilford Battle Ground.

Etheldred m. Jean (Jane) Lane, d/o Barnabas Lane of Halifax, NC. Jane's parents died when she was young, and she was reared by her father's brother, Joel Lane of Raleigh. The five children of Etheldred and Jane Lane Jones were:

  1. Elizabeth, b.Feb 10, 1776 and m. Abel Olive;
  2. Allen b. Mar 6, 1778 and m. Sally Elkins;
  3. Augustine b. Feb 1, 1781 and m. Edith Barker;
  4. Martin b. Feb 6,1784 and m. first Sarah Olive and Second Nancy Harrison; and
  5. Barnabas b.Mar 30, 1786 and m. Mary (Polly) Rowland.

The cemetery is on private property and may only be accessed or viewed with the permission of the owner. The cemetery is located on a land grant dating back to 1790, deeded to Etheldred Jones, a veteran of the Revolutionary War who served as a Captain in the North Carolina Militia, and has been in continuous ownership by Jones family descendants since.

Obituary:

"Died at his residence in Wake County, on the 2nd inst., in the 85th year of his age, Capt. Etheldred Jones. He was a brave and successful commander in the Revolution. In the death of this venerable patiot, Society has sustained an irreparable loss. He was an indulgent parent and kind neighbor. His mansion was a perfect asylum for the poor and the needy."[2]
