Biography

When Ivy Jones was born on 27 January 1919 in Sandy Bay, Tasman, her father, Lambert, was 38, and her mother, Ellen, was 36. She married Christopher Walter Mayes and they had five children together. She also had one son with Laurence Robert Bruce. She died on 23 July 2006 in Christchurch, Canterbury, at the age of 87, and was cremated. Her ashes were scattered near her birth place at Marahau, Tasman.

When Ivy's mother, Ellen Knight, died in 1922 her family was split up and Ivy was sent to live with family friends, the Stringers (Samuel Stringer and Catherine), at their farm in the Lud Valley, Hira, Nelson some distance from Sandy Bay where Ivy had lived until then. The Stringers had earlier been farming at Sandy Bay. The death of Ellen Knight was tragic and details can be found in the Coroner's hearing report.

It is uncertain if Ivy was formally adopted by her new guardian Samuel Stringer but the lack of evidence for that indicates that this probably didn't happen. It is rumored that Lambert opposed adoption.

Ivy knew very little of her life with Ellen and Lambert. It wasn't until near the end of her life, in 1982, that she exchanged letters about this with her older sister Edna who filled in some of the detail.
