Biography

Name

There were several men named Phillip Jones who lived in the same time frame in colonial Virginia. One lived in Caroline County, is sometimes referred to in deeds as "Philemon/Phillemon" Jones and had a wife named "Jane" whose unproven maiden name might have been Watkins. They owned land on Robinson River in Spotsylvania County. [1][2]

The Phillip Jones we are interested in was in Henrico County, then moved into Lunenburg and died in Charlotte County. The name of his wife is not known and unproven. We believe this Phillip had a brother Richard Jones. Phillip Jones of Lunenburg/Charlotte County had land on Reynold's Fork.

Birth

The earliest record found thus far for Philip is a land patent 27 Feb 1734 to Phillip Jones Jr of Henrico County, Virginia for 200 acres in Prince George County located on Upper Flatt Creek below the upper Tomahawk Branch. [3] We assume he was at least 21 to acquire this land and thus was born 1713 or before.

Land Records

Phillip Jones was living in Henrico County in 1734 when Dale Parish was formed as shown from his land patent in Prince George County.

He remained in Henrico County in 1736 but took out another patent in Prince George County. There is a land patent on 17 March 1736 for Richard Jones of Prince George County and Philip Jones of Henrico County that provides proof of family relationships and residences. The newly patented property was 145 acres in Amelia County located on the upper side of Flatt Creek and the description states, "beginning at his brother, Philip Jones, lower corner."

There is another transaction by the brothers in 1744. Philip Jones and Richard Jones of Dale Parish, Henrico County sell 544 acres on Winterpock Creek to John Ealam (sic) the younger.[4]

Tracking the divisions of Virginia counties provides many places to look for the Jones brothers in subsequent years after they left Henrico. The Jones brothers land ownership progresses into Prince George which was divided 1720 into Brunswick and both counties contributed in 1735 to create Amelia County. Lunenburg was created 1745 from Brunswick.

The first county court held in Lunenburg County, Virginia May 1746 mentions Philip Jones was among others working on a road from the mouth of Ash Camp Creek into Col. Randolph's Road.[5]

Phillip's brother Richard took out a land patent in Lunenburg County on land adjoining him in 1750. [6]

William Holt apparently ended up with Richard Jones Land Grant, and in 1759 conveyed it to Daniel Handkins. [7] Daniel Hankins was the father-in-law of Amy Jones, who married John Hankins about 1769.

About William Holt: There is a 1750 April 25 Marriage Record in Lunenburg County, Virginia for one Rachel Jones (daughter of Thomas Jones and sister of Elizabeth Jones the wife of Richard Jones) and William Holt. There is a 1764 June 14 Deed in Lunenburg County, Virginia Godfrey & Thomas Jones to William Holt. [8]

In 1762 Phillip Jones disposed of what was remaining of his 1749 Lunenburg County, Virginia Land Grant (Spring Creek).[9]

Philip's neighbors are identified in a Lunenburg County Court Order for roadwork in 1762. [10]

It appears Phillip Jones moved in 1763.[11]We know he acquired a Lunenburg County, Virginia Land Grant (Reynolds Fork) located approximately 15 miles from his 1749 Lunenburg County, Virginia Land Grant at Spring Creek. When Phillip Jones died he was still in possession of the 200 Reynolds Fork acres. [12]

Part of Lunenburg County became Charlotte County in 1764.

The tax list for Lunenburg County confirms his residence. [13][14] [15]

Death

The Inventory and appraisement of the estate of Phillip Jones was recorded in Charlotte County, Virginia July 5, 1773. [16]

The estate records of Charlotte County prove Phillip Jones of Charlotte County was not the same as the man in Caroline County who was still alive in 1777 and living in Caroline County when he signed a petition to the Virginia legislature.[17]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Phillip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Phillip:

There is a Philip Jones listed in the Bristol Parish (Prince George County, VA) records with wife Amy. I don't know if they are for your Philip. I have a Philip Jane in the same area and they Jane/s surname is often indexed as Jones, so I was looking at them. There are also a lot of christening for Richard Jones and wife Sarah and Thomas and wife Amy, so I assume they are your men. There was a large Jones family there. I think maybe descending from Peter Jones. I have read a lot of their earlier records.

Lecrece daughter of Philip and Amy Jones born March 11 1726 Wm son of Philip and Amy Jones Sept 23 1728 David son of Philip and Amy born March 4th 1734 baptised 4th May.

The Bristol Parish records (published book) is on Ancestry. https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/49093/
