The Enigmatic Woodford Jordan
'by 3rd great granddaughter Grace McChesney Boerner, Nov. 1, 2015

Woodford Jordan (also spelled Jaurdan and Jordoen) was born about 1781, in Virginia Colony during the Revolutionary War. Stu Jordan, one of our cousins, has done extensive research on this Jordan family.[2] Woodford is presumed to be the 1st son of his father Robert Jordan, and wife Rebecca (maiden name unknown) in the 1800 Census for Robert Jordan[3]. He then has 1 younger sister and 3 younger brothers.

The earliest record found for Woodford was the 1810 Census[4]. Here Woodford is shown with 2 sons under 10 years old (Ewell and Thomas L.) and 2 adults, one male between 26 and 45 (Woodford) and one female between 16 and 25 (Elizabeth). This establishes an age range for Woodford, his wife, and his two sons. This same Woodford in 1830 [5] lives next to Ewell Jordan. Jane Coffey is found near Enoch, Ewel, Woodford, and my Coffey's Benjamin, Bennett, and Caswell in several sequential censuses.

In 1810, [4] this Woodford was married and in Rockingham Co., North Carolina (his family was 20010-0010000). In this 1810 Census, there were 4 Jordans living in fairly close proximity. In 1840, Census [6], Woodford now lives in Hawkins Co., TN next to Ewel, and Enoch, and a couple of doors away is Thomas Jurdin. It is the 1850 Census [7] that first tells us his date of birth "about 1781" and his wife, Elizabeth's as 1786. The 1850 Census also established Woodford's birthplace to be Virginia, and Elizabeth's to be North Carolina. Note that the the Virginia/Carolina boundary was not clearly defined at this time and that names of counties was changing.

Woodford Jordan married Elisabeth Coffey, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Hayes Coffey in about 1805 according to the 1860 Census [8], in Rockingham County, North Carolina.
