Peter, Thanks for the prompt response. While I have this chance could I please ask how one corrects 'errors' on the Find A Grave site?

Phil, if you are adding burial details, I'm encouraging people to add the cemetery category to the profile. It enables a lot of searching and filtering capability as well as clearly documenting the cemetery someone is buried in.

Peter, following your previous comment I signed up at F-a-G, contacted the contributor re possible wrong dates for a couple of the individuals named (on the 'memorial stone', not 'grave stone') & am still awaiting a response. There is no evidence that the individuals were actually 'buried' at this Sussex churchyard/cemetery.

One of the named individuals is actually shown to have died in the West Indies.

Yes, FindAGrave is fairly notorious for inaccuracies. If there is a photo of the headstone then it's more trustworthy, but I've come across inaccurate details on the gravestones as well.

Peter: Hello & thank you for the recent changes you have made on the profile pages of some of my ancestors.

I'm interested to learn of your connection with these individuals and their relatives. Are you please able to comment? If you do not have a direct connection, I can only assume that your work on Queensland graves/cemeteries/burials/etc. has prompted your interest and hope that you may be able to assist me with my numerous other relatives who have a 'Queensland' connection. You will probably have noticed my amateurish attempts in adding to profiles, where I mostly attempt to start at the beginning, and I see great potential in expanding my efforts by not concentrating on births/baptisms/christenings/marriages/etc. to eventually arrive at end-of-life detail. My thanks in advance for any/all assistance. Regards.....Phil (Grace-883).

Hi Peter,

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.

We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The Australia Project Leadership Team ~ Gillian, Margaret and Veronica

I'm happy to still be part of the project. I'm focusing on Queensland cemeteries and any veteran I come across

Hi Peter, did you know you have a number of living unlisted profiles in the NSW and especially QLD Unsourced categories? It's impossible for people working through the unsourced categories to be able to find sources for living unlisted people. Cheers, Margaret
thanks for the feedback. I'll review them.

I think this are some of the original profiles i added years ago, of living people, and the categories are for my own reminder. I guess I could create some private categories to replace them so other people don't have this issue.

I don't add living people anymore.

posted by Peter Kane
Thanks Peter, that's the perfect solution for living profiles, as only the PM can realistically monitor them. Would be great if you could move them to some personal categories. There are also some living ones of yours in this category, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Queensland%2C_Needs_Birth_Source_Researched that preferably should be in a personal category.

Thanks for your help, regards, Margaret

I've cleaned up all my unsourced profiles. The only profiles with unsourced categories should be able to be edited now.

Hi Peter

The 2023 Source-a-Thon is coming up on the weekend commencing 29 September. As usual it’s a 72 hour event. The Southern Cross Stars team will be participating and we’d love to have you on the team again if you’re available. You can register at now at register-now-for-the-2023-source-a-thon. We’re not a super-competitive team, so even if you are only free for a couple of hours or you like to work slowly and go down rabbit holes, it will be fun to have you involved. It all helps to improve the tree. We’ll be on Discord again too, if you like to chat during the event. Gillian, Captain, Southern Cross Stars

Hi Peter,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Peter, just a quick one, with the GW sticker, it needs both units= (plural) for the display, and unit= (adds the category in conjunction with branch= ). If you don't have both, it places the profile in the top level category "Australian Imperial Force, World War I.

See this one, https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Adsett-60&diff=164236077&oldid=164235604

Thanks for helping with these. regards, Margaret

thanks for that.  I'm not a military person at all so the units get me very confused.

For WW1 service I've got a spreadsheet that takes data from the UNSW site: https://www.aif.adfa.edu.au/index.htm

Although it's not a primary site, it seems comprehensive, and is a good starting point. It seems to have at least one unit for each record. I'll make sure there is no sticker proposed if there isn't at least one unit.

I've implemented the sticker and category extraction. I'm just working on the enddate code to use a KIA date if available. there is no discharge date if a soldier was killed, and I'm trying to parse a date from the destinations data if there is no discharge date.

I'll check on all my profiles before I let people know of the changes.

you can have a look at it if you like. You select date from the UNSW site and paste it on the LHS of the 1st sheet. categories, sticker and draft bio appears on the RHS in the purple section

Hello Peter,

It's time for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for contributing to the project and Australian profiles on WikiTree during the last year. We really appreciate you!

If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. You will, of course, be very welcome to rejoin the project down the track whenever you want to.

We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.

  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, Just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. hi, keep me in the Australia project please.

I seem to be managing a lot of profiles that need similar updates (new categories etc.), so some bulk updating and/or scripting tools would be good. maybe they already exist and I don't know about them.

Hi Peter,

I noticed that you used the Challenge Tracker to track changes during the last Sourcerers' Challenge. Please consider officially joining us for the Sourcerers' Challenge. You can find information, including how to join, on the Sourcerers Project page. To get directly to the current G2G thread, here's the October Challenge thread.

No pressure, every profile with a source makes our WikiTree better. Your work is appreciated. Thanks for sourcing!

Debi - Sourcerers' Challenge Facilitator

PS Please only use the tracker for Profiles created before the current month. The goal of the Sourcerers Challenge is to get the existing profiles updated.

Yep, I see you in there. When we finish stats early in November, we will award the Sourcerers Badge. Once you have that, you don't need to register each month. We'll keep adding your points on your entry in the spreadsheet. Have fun!

Hi Peter, I just noticed that when you add sources to a profile, you sometimes are not removing the Unsourced tag, which leaves the profile in the Unsourced reports.

tag as meaning that there was either no sources, or one of the dates or relationships needed to be added. eg. if I had a death date from a family source but not from an official BDM. How do i indicate that there is a particular source missing?
posted by Peter Kane
Hi Peter, the Unsourced template should be added only where there is no valid source for any of the data. Once there is one valid source it is removed. See this page, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources_FAQ#When_should_the_Unsourced_Research_Note_Box_be_used.3F

Various maintenance categories can be used to indicate missing records, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Maintenance_Categories and some people use personal categories to keep track of their profiles that need additional sources located.

Regards, Margaret

Hi Peter, when you create a new Queensland location category, could you use the parent category Category:Queensland, Places, and add at least 50 characters content to avoid a category error. See what I've added to Category:Mooloolaba, Queensland.

Thanks!

The Ireland Project (previously the Irish Roots Project) has now changed its structure into Teams. We require everyone with the Ireland Badge to be a member of at least one Team or Sub-Team and our google group.

See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland for details.

The Teams are :-

1 Categories Team
2 Counties Team
3 Managed Profiles Team
4 Membership Team
5 Profile Improvement Team
6 Topics Team
7 Diaspora

Can you let me know if you’d like to stay on in the new project and which team(s) you’d like to join. Please also let me know your e-mail address so that I can get you added to the project’s Google Group or confirm you are already a member of the google group.
