Christoph Kappel was a Volga German.

Family #29 in the 1834 Grimm census.

The Kappel name does not appear in the 1775 or 1798 Grimm censuses. He was probably born in a different Volga village and moved to Grimm after 1798. There were Kappels in Katharinenstadt, but by 1798 there were only two women with that name recorded there: Christiania Kappel Wegner, age 37, and her mother, Anna Elisabeth Kappel, age 73. Christoph could have been Christiania's brother and Anna Elisabeth's son, but he should have been listed in the 1798 Katharinenstadt census. He is not. There were no other Kappel families listed in the 1798 census records.
