Booker Keesee[1] is presumed to have been born circa 1796, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to Mildred Mustain and Jesse Keesee.
On February 21, 1814, in Pittsylvania County, Booker married Jane Dove.[1]
Booker was a Primitive Baptist, a memer of Stinking Creek Meeting, later named Greenwood Baptist Church and did not beleive in slavery. When Jane given 2 slaves from her father at marriage, they were either sold or freed. Jane had 12 children and probably died in childbirth with the last child. Booker, faced with a large family, and no slaves, quickly remarried a widow with no children, Catherine Mayhew Doss, daughter of Henry Mayhew Sr. and Sally. Widow of Arthur Doss. She had three more children with Booker before his death in 1846. Catherine was about 35-40 at the time of her marriage and still had 3 children before Booker's untimely death, about the time the mill he'd rebuilt, inherited from his father, Jesse Keesee, most likely in a mill accident.
Catherine Mayhew Doss Keesee only lived a few more years, leaving her three and some of the younger 12 to be taken care of by various families. The first sale of estate held Nov 1846, again in 1847. Vol. 16 Pitts. Account Book. He probably died during or shortly after the construction of the mill, as his actual death date was in 1846, as the inventory of his estate was Nov 1846, and he died intestate leading to years of litigation and court supervision of the estate due to the ages of some of his children. It was settled in 1871. See Pitts. Court Minutes Books and Chancery Court Order book- I will upload the file as soon as I have time. I have copies from the court, necessary for DAR membership of Karen Wood through William Dove, Jane's father))
Booker had applied for and built a grist mill on Old Woman's Creek, in Oct. 1845. (PIttsylvania County VA Order Book). The mill, in the same spot as the one run by his father, was subsequently taken over and run by son Jesse. His grave is probably in an unmarked spot on Ollie Ramsey's Farm off Rt 29. up Sycamore Rd. The mill was eventually sold to the Owen's family, whose son had married one of Booker's granddaughters, and operated as Owen's Mill until the 1940's. A portion of the building was used as a social club through at least 2000 on Rockford School Rd, Gretna VA).
Litigation between William and Jesse after Booker's death intestate over ownership of Mill, which Booker had started year before his death.
The settlement of Booker's land and full estate continued in litigation until 1871, when the land was finally sold by a Court appointed a commission and divided to children or grandchildren, each mentioned by name, including , "Sallie Keesee, wife of Thomas Colbert:". Document on file with K. Wood and DAR.
Per Dr. Vincent Keesee (orally) Shadrack Mustain was founder of Wetherford Primitive Baptist Church, where probably Booker Keesee was member or Stinking Creek Meeting which became Greenfields Baptist Church after the fall of the Quaker movement. Booker's name found on the membership rolls of both churches and had asked to be allowed to miss church due to milling needs which was granted. (rolls and minutes of Greenfields Baptist Church)
On January 6, 1837, in Pittsylvania County, Booker married Catherine Doss (widow of Arthur Doss].).[2]
