Biography

I was only 11 years old when my grandfather, Chester Arthur Kelley Jr, died so there isn't much I remember about him. I do remember he was of slim build and a little rough around the edges. He married at least 4 times and divorced at least 3 times. My mom always said that my dad, Chester Archie Kelley Sr., had a difficult time getting along with his dad. From the research regarding divorce records, it looks like Chester Arthur Kelley Jr. was an abuser as was his dad Chester Arthur Kelley Sr. I'm thankful my dad was able to break the cycle.

16 May 2016 In the marriage application for Chester Arthur Kelley and Edna Mae Mizener it states that Chester was previously married once before and was divorced on 30 Jan 1919. No spouse listed. 1. Was this 30 Jan 1919 divorce from someone unknown or could it be a second divorce from Lina Ann Patton Kelley? 2. Divorce records for Chester Arthur Kelley were found for Lina Ann Patton (divorced 1904), Amelia Gummo Leady (divorced 1927) and Viola E. V. Smith (divorced 1944). So who did Chester divorce in 1919? He lied on marriage application with Edna Mae Mizener when he said he had only been married once before (he was married 3 times). 3. First wife, Lina Ann Patton was married to Chester Arthur Kelley Jr. in 28 Oct 1901 and divorce record states that she and Chester were divorced in 20 Sep 1904. Another marriage record states they were married in 31 Dec 1904. If Lina Ann divorced in Sep for extreme cruelty, why remarry in Dec of the same year. Was it because she was pregnant with child #2 who was born in 1905? 2. In 1920 Census, Lina Ann is living in the Sanger household and is still using her married name of Kelley. With Lina Ann are child #1 Maude (b. 1902), child #4 Chester Archie Kelley (b. 1914) and child #5 Marie Kelley (b. 1916). Child #2 Leola (b.1905) is a border in the house next door to the Sanger family, and child #3 Violet (b.1908) is living with her grandparents in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Can I assume that after the second marriage of Lina Ann and Chester that they continued to have children. Could they have gotten another divorce in 1919? 3. In 1922 Lina Ann Patton Kelley then marries John Isaac Sanger. They have two children born in 1922 and 1925. 4. In the 1919 marriage record for child #1, Maude Elizabeth Kelley, born in 1902, it states that her mother is Lina Patten and Maude's father is Malcolm Hillin. Lina Ann and Chester married 28 Oct 1901. O.K., so Chester married Lina Ann when she was 7 months pregnant with Malcolm Hillin's child. That makes sense. 5. In 1900 Michigan Census Image #19, Lina Ann Patton, age 16, is living in the household of William and Sarah Story. Lina Ann is listed as their granddaughter. Are these Story's related to Malcolm Hillin or Lina Ann Patton? 6. On the 1900 Michigan Census Image #20 Lina Ann's future father and mother-in-law are living a few houses away along with their children Chester Arthur (future husband), Oscar and Clyde. It's very likely that Chester and Lina Ann knew each other. Did Chester make an "honest woman" out of Lina Ann?
