Biography

William Kelsay was born circa 1745, in Allentown, near Bucks County, Pennsylvania. William served as an officer during the American Revolutionary War. He was a First Lieutenant in Captain Robert McCounaughy's company of the Pennsylvania Militia. William died before September, 1806, in Washington county, Tennessee. [1]

William is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A064413. DAR records are found under the surname Kelsey, with the disclaimer, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames." DAR records indicate that William's wife's name was Agnes Gowdey. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been by the descendants of their daughters, Mary Kelsey, who married John Patton; Margaret Kelsey, who married John Adams; Susanna Kelsey, who married John Blair; and Ann Adams, who married John McCracken. [2]

William Kelsey wrote his Will on July 8, 1805 and it was proved August, 1806. The Will mentions his son, John Kelsey, grand-daughter, Agnes Goudy Kelsey, daughter, Susanna Blair, daughter, Margaret Adams, grand-daughter, Agnes Adams, grandson, William Adams, grand-daughter, Nancy Blair, daughter, Elizabeth Davis, daughter, Ann McCracken, and daughter, Mary Patton. William names his son, John and his son-in-law, John Blair as executors. [3]

Researcher's Notes

Note: Sold his estate on Feb. 1, 1779. Was the last of his family to leave PA. By Dec. 1781 he is listed as a resident of Rockbridge Co., VA. By 1787 he has again moved, this time settling in Washington Co., TN (which at this period is called the Northwest Territory of North Carolina) where he is listed on a tax list as owning 300 acres of land. His farm was on Big Limestone Creek. In 1793, Major William Kelsay was appointed to patrol Sullivan County, TN.
All but one of their six children remained in Tennessee.
