Gilbert Kennedy was born in Scotland.

Gilbert was born about 1565, the son of Thomas Kennedy and Agnes Montgomerie.

. . . In 1570 Thomas Kennedy of Bargany rescued Allan Stewart, commendator of Crossraguel Abbey, from Dunure Castle after the Gilbert Kennedy, Earl of Cassillis, had had Stewart tortured to try to gain the lands of the abbey, starting a feud. Gilbert Kennedy of Bargany, Thomas’s son, was murdered by the Earl of Cassillis in 1601 in a further dispute about lands. . .[1]

He passed away in 1601. All graphics pertaining to the memorials on this page are sourced from Find A Grave contributor Barbara Lewis, as below cited.

Thanks Andrew Ross. Changes have been made as indicated.

Thus, the only mention in the Paul, Sir James Balfour. Scots Peerage:founded on Wood's ed. of Sir Robert Douglas's Peerage of Scotland; containing an historical and genealogical account of the nobility of that kingdom [Vol 5 (1904-1914, p. 113) Edinburgh: D Douglas] record is:

In 1600 both he [Sir Robert Gordon of Glen] and Gilbert Kennedy of Bargany claimed the office of Admiral on the south-west coast, with the right to hold courts at Lochryan, and on 26 Feb they were charged to give assurances for the keeping of the peace. (Citing P. C. Reg., vi. 84.)

While Gilbert Kennedy of Bargany appears on pg 113 in Volume V of the Scots Peerage, no where is he listed as the 7th or referred to as Sir.

Vol II lists only the 1st thru 4th, with the later going extinct in 1736.

Hi Dennis, The merge of the two Gilberts was brought to my attention by the Data Doctors "Location Challenge." Both you and I cited the same Find A Grave memorial, which is substantiated. Additional detail on the marker, as well as the parentage diverges, though. Please review Kennedy-14090 and the parents I have shown. Please review the marker from the Find A Grave memorial, and the sources that I have for the parents, too, and I think that you will find is that the marker's parents are the correct parents for Gilbert. Let me know if you have conflicting sources so that we can resolving any remaining questions. The sources on parents that I reviewed on Kennedy-739 are not inclusive for Gilbert.

Thanks very much. Fann Fann Fann-206

Kennedy-739 and Kennedy-14090 appear to represent the same person because: With the difference in birth date, I did not find the match until after creating the additional family connections. Find-A-Grave may have the most accurate date of birth for Gilbert, given that the contributor in fact provides evidence of having visited the gravesite and provided the photographic evidence in the plaque signage, even though it is not transcribed in its entirety on the website, the image can be viewed and read in its entirety.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Kennedy-1004 and Kennedy-739 appear to represent the same person because: Same father; bio note in Kennedy-739 says he's supposed to be Laird Drumurchie, and no other info in profile to suggest that he's someone else.
