In 1357 he was a hostage to the English for the liberation of King David II.
He married firstly, Marion Sandilands, daughter of Sir James Sandiland of Calder, by Eleanora, only daughter of Archibald Douglas of that Ilk, and relict of Alexander Bruce, Earl of Carrick.[2]
He married secondly, Agnes Maxwell, daughter of Sir John Maxwell of Pollok and Elizabeth de Lindsay.[3] They had issue:[4]
John, the 4th son of Gilbert and Agnes, acquired the estate of Blairquhan. Died before 12 Jun 1473, when his son John was Laird. His descendants held the estate of Blairquhan until 1621 when it was sold by John Kennedy to James Kennedy, eldest surviving son of Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culzean.
