The "Red Rubies" Claim Your Attention
A Link with London
Aubyn Vale Devons Bred by
Descendant of Old "Freeman of The City"
NO one would imagine that the Freedom of the City of London and coronation robes could be associated with the early history of our cattle industry unless he stumbled upon the story behind Aubyn Vale, Narrawa.
On 5th October, 1836, the Freedom of the City of London was conferred upon one, "William Kensit, son of Joseph Kensit . . and goldsmith." The scroll presented upon that occasion is now carefully preserved at Aubyn Vale homestead, at Narrawa, near Crookwell, where Messrs. P. C. and S. V. Kensit have their Devon stud.
The scroll bears the name of William IV. as reigning monarch, and the signature of the then Lord Mayor of London.
The Kensits were experts in silks and satins, and handled gold and silver in their association with costly apparel. They were entrusted with the preparation of robes for the Royal Family, and, down to the most recent event, supplied the magnificent robes worn by Kings and queens upon the occasion of their Coronation. The original firm is now John Ferry and Sons, having passed over to the daughters' side of the Kensit family. Apparently the gold, rather than the silks and satins, appealed to Henry Kensit, son of William, and stories of Australian gold discoveries dragged him away from his father's business and associations while he was still a lad. His father, however, doubted the accuracy of the stories circulated in the old country about the rich crops of gold that jutted out here and there in this distant land, and packed off, with young Henry (a huge box of tools) he had learned to handle in his trade, believing that he would ultimately set up business in Sydney.
Lost Land Grant
When he landed he was given a grant of land at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, by the Government. He overlooked the foot that the grant carried certain conditions, and after roaming around for a few years he returned to Brisbane to find that he had lost his right to the property. There is no record of his having picked up handfuls of gold; but he did decide to open business in Sydney. In the outback, however, a man of his education was much in demand for the preparation of legal and other documents. Having quite an amount of clerical work put into his hands, and having met the lady that was to become his wife, Henry Kensit failed to reach the city.
Aubyn Vale
Aubyn Vale, Narrawa, near Crookwell, was a grant by the Government to Dr. Gibson, of Goulburn, and remained in the Gibson family until 1889. It thenpassed to Mr. James Marsden, of Sylvia Vale, and in 1905 came into the possession of Henry Kensit. Sylvia Vale properties have since become part of the Kensit family holding.
Historic Homestead
Aubyn Vale is an interesting old homestead. Part of the old building is evidence of its association with the convict days the iron bars that still protect the windows in one portion of what is now an outbuilding. It was here, from a hut, portion of tho ruins of which may still be seen, that "Scotty,"- a bushranger, was shot by station manager Fry in 1839.
Breeding of Devons
Into this conglomeration of historic events comes the Australian cattle industry. Mr. Henry Kensit's five sons now occupy a big area of the Narrawa country, and are playing no small part in cattle and sheep raising. Messrs. P. C, and S. V. Kensit have a high-class Devon stud, providing another link with the old land. Numbers of their stud animals have been imported, and other purchases have been made at high figures. Aubyn Vale homestead is occupied by Mr. P. C. Kensit, who directs the stud. Both partners have travelled extensively and have, besides picking up some of the best stock procurable (Including English champions), for Aubyn Vale, acquired considerable knowledge of the cattle business at home and abroad. Their cattle have won many prizes in Sydney and Melbourne, and established a high reputation. Mr. P. C. Kensit takes an active part In the affairs of the Devon Society as a vice-president. Note: Kensit, Percy Cecil (1888-1957)
Further to the brief announcement last month of the tragic death in a car accident of Mr. Percy Cecil Kensit, of Aubyn Vale, Narrawa, N.S.W., it was no surprise to those who were his friends to know that he died as he had lived—doing a kindness. With all his quiet demeanour, courtesy, and ever-ready smile he had a great strength of character and determination, fixed to a standard of the highest integrity in every phase of his social and business dealings. He indeed was an individualist, who set an example to others, and it was characteristic of him to offer on that fateful day of 5th November to drive some of the station employees into Crookwell. The accident occurred on the way home, just near the station entrance at a sharp bend in the creek, the bank of which had been washed away in the previous year's flood.
Percy Kensit was born at Woodford, Narrawa, in 1888. He was one of the family of six sons and six daughters of the late Henry Kensit, J.P., who came to Australia in 1846 and took up Woodford in the late '60s. He was a brother of Mrs. John Ferry, the Ferrys being a distinguished family of weavers, with interests in the woollen mills of France, Belgium, and Holland. Last year marked the celebration by the Ferry family of the 110th anniversary of their firm's silk spinning industry, which produces the most exquisite craftsmanship devoted very largely at times to the manufacture of Royal Robes. Those used by King Edward VII at his Coronation were made by the Ferrys, as indeed were many others required by the monarchies of Europe. During one of his visits to England the late Mr. Kensit was presented by the Guild of Cloth Weavers with a complete set of English Coinage minted in gold.
After serving with the 53rd Infantry Battalion, A.I.F., on the Somme and elsewhere in the 1914-18 World War he and his brother Sidney V. settled down to build up a valuable wool growing flock based on Coonong blood and a large commercial herd of cattle, favouring for the latter the Devon-Shorthorn cross, as expounded to their father by James Marsden, from whom Henry Kensit had purchased Aubyn Vale in 1905. P. C. and S. V. Kensit's Aubyn Vale Stud of Devons became very well known from its inception in 1934 until during the last war, when man power troubles brought showing to an end. It is still doing good business, however, with its stud cattle.
Between them the Kensit brothers put together over 20,000 acres in the Narrawa-Crookwell district and also had Sylvia Vale, near Crookwell and Rock Lodge at Cooma. Percy Kensit was a conscientious member of the Masonic Club, and for many years was a member of the Crookwell A. & P. Society, the Crookwell Picnic Race Club, and the R.S.L. Some evidence of the esteem in which he was held was seen at the combined military and masonic funeral service accorded to him at Narrawa.
The late Mr. Kensit loved horses and expressed his sportsmanship in breeding and racing thoroughbreds in partnership with his brother, Sid, or with his wife. These horses included Star Bloom, Blue Lilac, Man of Law, Moondale, Hinges, Rail Sled, etc.
Mrs. Kensit, who survives her husband, with their 17 year old daughter Barbara, was Miss Dulcie Booth, of Narrawa. Only three weeks before his own death Percy Kensit's brother-in-law William Kelly, of Corringle, had passed away. His five brothers survive him, being William Kensit, of Baan Baa; Harry, of Sydney; Sidney, of Reidsdale; Frederick, of Llandillo; and George, who resides in the old family home of Woodford. Three of his sisters are living and three predeceased him. The latter were Mrs. Wm. Kelly, of Rugby; Mrs. G. Gay, of Boorowa; and Mrs. Mary Sheppard, of Wheeo Homestead. The surviving sisters are Mrs. John Gay, of Wheeo; Mrs. Frank Brown, of Wheeo; and Mrs. A. H. Wheelwright, of Rosedale, Rugby.
