Andreas Ludwig Kessinger was born 17 Aug 1704 in Selzen, Selzen, Mainz-Bingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. His parents were Johann Balthasar Kissinger and Anna Maria Bingenheimer.
[[Karlsruhe, Germany on 9 April, 1737. Together with a Johann George Kessinger, believed to be Andreas' brother, and other inhabitants of the German Palatinate, they sailed from Amsterdam - but last from Dover - to Philadelphia, PA, on the Ship William (S. S. Wilhelm), embarking from Rotterdam. The ship's master was John Carter, who listed 180 passengers and crew.
They were listed as "Palatines" on the ship roster. A Palatine was a native or inhabitant of the Palatinate, a district which included the lower Rhine Valley in Germany (including Karlsruhe). This area was located in West-Central Germany and between the French/German border on the west and the Rhine River on the east. Many Palatines emigrated to America just before the Revolutionary War. Germany as a country has not existed very long. Prior to 1871, what is now Germany was a number of separate states, such as Wurttemberg, Prussia, Bavaria, etc., whose boundaries changed frequently as a result of war and other causes. The Palatinate was one of these states, and was located along the Rhine River, roughly where the modern German state of Rhineland-Pfalz is located. However, finding an American reference to someone being from the "Palatinate" does not always point to a specific place of origin, but rather an approximate location in or near western or southern Germany. In the 18th. and early 19th. century, it was a term sometimes used in America to describe immigrants from other adjoining German-speaking areas in addition to the "Palatinate".
The region has always been, and still is today, primarily agricultural in nature, noted especially for their fine vineyards which produce many varieties of "Rhine Wines." The agricultural nature of the locale might explain why they settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, which is a noted agricultural area. The Palatinate found itself torn between many forces in the early 1700's. Situated between Catholic France and Germany, the birthplace of Protestantism, it found itself subjected to warfare and continuing processions of soldiers marching through their homeland. The area suffered from economic distress resulting from continuous wars, from several desolating winters, and financial reverses. At this time William Penn started actively advertising the benefits of emigrating to Pennsylvania for refuge. Thus Andreas and Johan Georg moved northward along the Rhine River to Rotterdam, Holland and came to the Province of Pennsylvania in America. Another reason that they might have chosen Pennsylvania was because it was a haven for many, many diverse sects.
[Andreas Kessinger, and his wife Susanna Fisherin (feminine version of "fisher") and children George Michael, Mathias, Andreas and Catharina Barbara were given permission to emigrate to Pennsylvania from Karlsruhe, Germany on 9 April, 1737.] [2]
