Biography

Jacob was born in 1757. Jacob Kimmel ... He passed away in 1824.

"Move to Stony Creek from Bermudian

Jacob’s parents appear to have moved to the Stony Creek, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania, from the Bermudian settlement in York Co., Pennsylvania, shortly before 1770 when they are listed as members of the Stony Creek German Baptist congregation. If so, Jacob would have been about 12 years old when they moved.[1]

"Revolutionary War

Several of Jacob’s descendants have become members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Sons of the American Revolution based on the service of a Jacob Kimmel in 1782 as private in Captain Michael Oberly’s Company, 3rd Battalion, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia. This Jacob’s service is even enscribed on his new tombstone. This is not correct. This Jacob Kimmel was living in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, 150 miles west of Lancaster County at the time and he was a member of the United Brethren Church that adhered to the principle of non-violence. This is another Jacob Kimmel, his cousin, who served in the Lancaster County Militia.[2]

"Jacob Kimmel was a farmer, a Whig, and a member of the United Brethren Church."[3]

"On 14 Jul 1779 “Jacob Kimbel,” age 21, was listed as an inmate (a married renter, head of household) in the 1779 Quemahoning Township, Bedford County. Jacob moved to Milford Township, Bedford County. In 1781 “Jacob Kemill” had 80 acres, 1 horse, and 1 cow. He claimed title to his land by “improvement.” A year later “Jacob Kimble” was listed as a farmer with 100 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, and 2 sheep. In 1783 “Jacob Kimel” had 100 acres, 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, and 3 sheep. He had a cabin and a barn on his farm with 4 inhabitants. While it is not clear what became of this farm, two years later on 22 Feb 1785 Jacob’s father received a warrant for 200 acres in Milford Township. When the parcel was surveyed it contained 179 acres. Philip deeded that land to Jacob on 16 Jun 1788.[4]

"In 1783 or 1784 Jacob moved his family back to Quemahoning Township. On 15 Jul 1784 Jacob, age 26, received a warrant from the state of Pennsylvania for 100 acres in Quemahoning Township. When the survey was made on 26 Sep 1786 the parcel was found to be 218¼ acres. In the 1784 tax list for Quemahoning Township, Jacob had 200 acres, 2 horses, 3 cattle, and 5 sheep. He had 35 cultivated acres, 8 acres of that planted with corn.[5]

"In 1785 Jacob was appointed the tax collector for Quemahoning Township."[6]

"In July 1798 Congress authorized the first direct tax by the United States government. When the tax lists exist they provide a wealth of information. The tax was assessed on property owned on 1 Oct 1798. As background, on that day Jacob was 41 years old and his wife, Mary, was 37. They had 10 children who may have been living at home; the oldest was 18 and the youngest was 8 months old. The tax list provides the following information. The Kimmel farm was located in Stonycreek Township. It was 218 acres and it was valued at $1,022. This was the farm he received a warrant for from the State of Pennsylvania in 1785. The family was living in a cabin, that measured 26’x32’ [832 square feet], made of hewn logs. It had three windows and 36 lights. The house sat on a lot that was 812 square feet. Home and lot were valued at $200. Their barn measured 32’x82’ [2,624 square feet] and was valued $150.[7]

"Jacob also owned 179 acres in Somerset Township deeded to him by his father in 1788. The property was occupied by Christian Lint. It had an 18’x20’ “C house” valued $15. The farm’s value was $572."[8]

"Jacob Kimmel’s Somerset County Estate Records

On 18 Nov 1824 “Ludwick Kimmel” and Tobias Musser qualified as the administrators of the estate of Jacob Kimmel, deceased, and gave a $2,000 administrators’ bond to ensure their faithful performance.[9]

"The initial account for Jacob’s estate was filed with the Court by his administrators on 2 May 1826. The administrators, Tobias Musser and Ludwick Kimmel, filed a Supplemental Account of the Estate on 1 Jan 1828. It was examined and the balance of $751.29 3/4 was ordered to be distributed according to law. Their account was confirmed on 20 Feb 1828."[10]
