Richard was born at the City of London Lying in Hospital on the 4th May 1870. His birth was registered by his mother on the 14th. His mother's maiden name is recorded as Broshan (appears as Bresnahan on the marriage certificate) who made her mark instead of signing. Their home address is given as 35 Field Lane, Farringdon Road and his fathers profession as "Hawker". [1]
In 1871 aged 10m, Richard was recorded with his parents at 6 Park Row, Peckham [2]. By 1881 (aged 11) they had moved to Crown Street, Camberwell where his father was a general dealer [3]
In 1891 he had left home and was living north of the river in Kensington, lodging on Bangor Street and working as a groom [4]
Richard married Mary Ann Wilkinson on the 24th December 1892 at St. Clements Church, Notting Hill after Banns. Richard was 21 years old and gave his profession as "Hawker". Mary was 22 years old and had no profession. Both gave their address as 36 St Clements Road. Richard's father is noted as Richard, a hawker. Mary's father is noted as George, a labourer. Both signed their own names. The witnesses were Frances Lewis and Charles Dyar (? poor writing) [5]
In 1901 [6] and 1911 [7] the family was living on Crescent Street in Kensington and Richard was a general dealer. Richard was a market trader, together initially with his brothers John and William. They had fruit and greengrocer shop in Crown Street, Acton (J&R Kingsman - this name was retained even though John died in 1919 and lived on for many years after Richard died in 1924). They also had market stalls in Acton market and Shepherds Bush market. Mum remembered Uncle Bill (probably William G as the original William died in 1912) counting up the money at the end of the day and giving her the occasional odd half-penny from the change.
Richard had a brief spell in the army at the start of WW1 although he never saw active service. His army papers (from Kew) have the following information:
Richard had glaucoma and lost the sight of one eye. He was known as "Dead eye Dick" on account of this and because of his skill at playing darts (even with one eye).
His wife, Mary, died in early 1914, after which he had a relationship with Edith (Dowsett) Morgan whose husband was killed at sea early in WW1. They never married, but as a result my grandmother ended up with two sons called Richard in her household.
Richard died in 1924 in Brentford [8]
