Maria Indiana Kinzie was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs John Kinzie, the first white settlers of early Chicago. Maria became the wife of General David Hunter who died in Washington DC. in 1886.
Maria Kinzie was the sister of Robert Allen Kinzie, thus David Hunter Kinzie's aunt. Maria married David Hunter, West Point class of 1822. David Hunter rose to the rank of Major General in the United States Army. He fought at Bull Run, was wounded, and then fought in the West. He came back east under Grant, and fought in the Shendoah in 1864. He burned the Virginia Military Institute. He was earlier famous for his order freeing slaves in 1862, even prior to the Emancipation Proclamation (Lincoln directed the order be rescinded). He served in the honor guard at Lincoln's funeral.[1]
