The Heuerling System had its roots from 16th and 17th Century. Note that Hermann Heinrich in the above reference was designated "Heuerling". It was based on the existing rights of inheritance, such as it prevailed in the region through the ages, whereby the oldest son was the sole heir. If there were no sons, but only daughters born, the daughter married and her husband took on his wife's name. The younger sons were due a "Child's portion" and that is why many younger siblings emegrated. [3]

Herman Heinrich was Heuerling on the Nobbe farm and he died February 22, 1831 at Address: Nobben Kotten (cottage on Nobbe farm) Cause of death: Wassersucht (dropsy - according to Yahoo answers: The symptoms of Dropsy is a swollen body, especially the abdomen, due to a build up of fluid in the tissues. The cause is usually environmental, or it can be organ failure. There is no real treatment.)
