Christina used the surname of Bruyn for the 1773 baptism of her son Jacobus T. Quick, and 23 years later, when she, along with her husband Jacobus Quick, sponsored the 1796 baptism of her granddaughter "Christina Catrina Quick". However her surname at her 1772 marriage and for the baptism of other children appears as Kleyn.
Where does the Kleyn come from???? I'm at a loss. The only explaination that come to mind is that she might have been either an illigimate child of Jacobus Bruyn, or a child "adopted " by Jacobus Bruyn. She seems to have used both names for life events. Of interest, she is not mentioned as a child of Jocabus Bruyn and Jane Graham, however several genealogical biographies suggest that she is a child of this couple, even giving Jacobus both Bruyn and Klyen surnames.
Have not been able to find much documentation re. Christina...a mystery, particularly if she was a child in the family (Bruyn, Bruin), a family that contained so many famous members. Perhap she was a black sheep, having married a Quick? Jacobus Bruyn was an wealthy lawer, and might have accepted a child as a ward or servant. No records of adoption have been found yet.
She was born in Shawangunk, Ulster, NY and died in Brooktondale, (a suburb of Ithaca) in Tompkins Co., NY, ca. 1851, having moved there, with her children, some time after Jacobus Quick died, ca. 1809. This was where her "younger brother" Andrew Bruyn, b. 1790, had moved to sometime before 1817. He was in politics in Ithaca, Tompkins, NY during 1817.
Does anyone have an answer to this mystery? Tom Quick, Quick-803 21:00, 1 May 2015 (EDT).
Christina|Cristina Catrina|Catharina|Caterina Bruyn was born Bet. 1751 and 1754 in Shawangunk, Ulster, New York, USA.[1][2] [Describes her father as Jacobus Bruyn /Kleyn/, m. to Jane Grahams] Where does the Kleyn come from?
Christina|Cristina Catrina|Catharina|Caterina (Bruyn) Kleyn married Jacobus James Quick (III) (1751-1809) on ca. 22 Aug 1772 at the Dutch Reformed Church, Schwangunk, Ulster, NY. Jacobus was the son of Jacobus Quick and Annetje Oosterhout (1725-1801). He served during the Revolutionary War, as a Pvt. 3rd Regt Ulster Co. Militia.
Christina Catrina) seems to have had the maiden name of either 'Kleyn' and/or 'Bruyn'. this suggest that she either was adopted by the Bruyns or was previously married to Mr. Kleyn. [3]. Christina Catrina Bruyn was listed as sponsor for her grand daughter Christina Catrina Quick's baptism as Christina Catrina Bruyn ; Rochester Reformed Church. [4]
Shwangunk was the family home of the Bruyns, and Ithaca, Tompkins, NY was the home of Andrew Bruyn. No Kleyns were found in Shawangunk.

Is it possible that Kleyn is a mistranslation of "klein" which in Dutch and German translates to "small?" Could it refer to her father being a younger or "smaller" Jacobus? No explanation why she is the only one using it. Just a thought.
