When I knew her, Romaine was an energetic, caring, and religious lady. She was outgoing, animated and had a charm that was genuine. She still lived in that brick "end of the row" home at Sydenham Street and Erie Ave. (1522 W. Erie Ave - SW corner) in Phila. that she and her husband Alfred were living in during the 1940 Census. She was Episcopalian, but attended several churches of different faiths. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She had been a hairdresser, by profession, and taught her daughter in law; Ruth, that trade. She also had operated a Tea Room and Restaurant on the basement floor of her house, which was above ground and had a side entrance. The first and second floors were divided into six efficiency apartments. Nearer the end of her life, she closed the restaurant and cared for elderly boarders including her sister in law, Annie Riegel Bortz, with whom she shared the top (3rd) floor of the house.
