Biography

Maria (Knaus) Saltzman has German Roots.

Family #90 in the 1798 Grimm census.
Family #142 in the 1834 Grimm census.
Family #163 in the 1857 Grimm census.

Anna Maria was originally from the Colony of Moor (Kluchy). Since she was born in 1771, her name was probably included in the 1775 Moor census.

According to Einwanderung in das Wolgagebeit 1764-1767, the only Knaus family in Moor was family #37, Adam Knaus, age 20, a farmer from Isenburg, Germany, and his wife Anna Katharina, age 19. They are not listed in the Kulberg Reports or on the Volga Transportation List. Anna Maria was his daughter.

The Center for Volga German Studies at Concordia University reports that her mother's maiden name was Mueller. Probably not coincidentally, her sister-in-law was married to a Martin Mueller from Wiedermus, Büdingen, Oberhessen. Because of the nature of German immigrant travel, with multiple families and family members traveling together, it is likely that she was the younger sister of Martin Mueller.

She is not specifically listed in the 1857 Grimm census, but her children and grandchildren are. [3] Most likely she passed away at some point prior to the census. Had she survived, she would have been 86 years old.
