Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed she was daughter of Walter Knight who has no documented children. He's been detached and her last name at birth is unknown.

Biography

Mary Osborn migrated from England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637. Robert Charles Anderson adds the following note in his Directory: "Probably wife of John Osborn."[1]

Children of John and Mary Osborn

  1. John Osborn who was born at Weymouth on February 2, 1639.[2]
  2. Mary Osborn who was married in Boston on May 7, 1659 to John Ross. She is called "daughter of John Osborn of Weymouth" in the record.[2]
  3. Matthew Osborne died 3o 1641 in Braintree.[3]May, 1641.[2]
  4. Ephraim Osborn who was born at Weymouth on August 11, 1657.[2]Married Jane Matson on October 21, 1697 at Cambridge. He died August 26, 1734 at the age of 78 years. Children: Sarah, Abigail, Mary, Jane, Ephraim, Thomas.[4]
  5. Patience Osborne, married Joseph Aldrich February 26, 1662. They moved to Rhode Island where she died in 1705.[5]

Raymon Meyers Tingley adds the following children in "Some Ancestryal Lines:"[6]

  1. Martha born April 6, 1638 at Weymouth and died May, 1641 at Weymouth.
  2. William born April 15, 1645 at Weymouth. m. Hannah daut. of Capt John Burton of Salem, Massachusetts.
  3. Walter born June 18, 1648 at Weymouth, d. Nov. 11, 1660 at Weymouth.
  4. Samuel born May 1, 1651 at Weymouth, died Nov. 12, 1660 at Weymouth.
  5. Elizabeth born Aug. 7, 1654 at Weymouth.

Evidently John and Mary Osborne did have an additional child, a girl, since on September 19, 1637 at the Quarter Court held at Boston, "Mary Osborne, the wife of _____ Osborne, being indited about the death of her daughter, found the byll ignoramus." A marginal note says, "Mary Osborn acqd."[7]

Mary, wife of John Osborne was brought before the Quarter Court again on July 29, 1641 where she was accused "for her grosse miscarriage in giveing her husband quick silver and other abuses." She was "censured to bee severely whiped."[7]

Research Notes

  • Torrey's New England Marriages gives surname of Mary [?KNIGHT] by 1639(40?), ?31 Mar 1637?; Weymouth; and cites Snow-Estes 2:101; Tingley-Meyers 12, 189, 261; Charlestown 716; Reynolds 31:128.[8]
  • Raymon Meyers Tingley in "Some Ancestral Lines" says John Osborne married in England to Mary the daughter of Walter Knight of Salem.[6] However, Anderson in his review of Walter Knight of Salem could not identify the children nor the wives of Walter Knight of Salem.[9]
  • George Walter Chamberlain in "History of Weymouth" conjectures that Matthew Osborne (who was apprentice to John Reade of Weymouth on May 3, 1637 then had his indenture transferred to John Doane of New Plymouth on September 14, 1637), was John Osborn's brother.[2]

I have a question about Unknown-546548 place of birth. I see many references to Weymouth, MA which is a New England State, but none from the country of England. Am I missing something? Thank you for your reply.

Linda,

Please clarify. The only reference to her birth indicates England. The New England births are for her children.

I updated the bio a bit to show she came from England.
I've been working on this, the biography of my 9th ggrandmother. I've tried to distinguish facts from the misinformation of Raymon Meyers Tingley.

Are there any who disagree that the surname "Knight" should be changed to Unknown? It was first stated as a probability by Tingley, then Torrey picked it up... several question marks are included in Torrey's entry. I've found no surname for her anywhere else. Anderson says in "The Great Migration Begins" that the wife and children of Walter Knight are not known.subscribers

edit: I guess we should discuss the dob, pob, dod, pod in the data section. I didn't find any sources for these dates and places. I would suggest changing to the dob, pob to 1619 (20 years before birth of 1st child) in England. Suggest leaving dod & pod as unknown. Does anybody have any further information/insight in these dates & places?

Four months, and there seems to be no comment/objection. If Tingley-Meyers is the source for "Knight", it does seem like her LNAB should be Unknown.

Her LNAB is unknown, and is now reflected in the data and biography
Knight-10246 and Knight-269 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, death; possibly married more than once?
