Damon Francis Knight was born 19 September 1922 in Baker, Baker, Oregon, the son of Frances S Knight and Leola Ladorie Damon.[1][2][3]
He became a science fiction fan at the age of eleven and published two issues of a fanzine, Snide. At eighteen, he left Hood River, Oregon for New York, where he joined the Futurions; while with the group, he sold his first story.[4][5]
He is known for his work as a science fiction author, editor, and critic, but he was also a fan and co-founder of the National Fantasy Fan Federation. He received a Hugo Award for Best Reviewer in 1956. He also wrote under the pen name Stuart Fleming Conanight.[6]
He first married Helen M Schlaz, in 1960 in New York City.[7] His second marriage was to author Kate Wilhelm in 1963[8], to whom he remained married until his death.[9] At the time of his marriage to Wilhelm, he had three children; with Wilhelm, he had one son.[10]
Damon Knight was known for his work to promote other writers, especially within the field of science fiction. He founded Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA, now a non-profit organization) as Science Fiction Writers of America, Inc. He and his wife, Kate Wilhelm, worked together to establish writers workshops, including the prestigious Clarion Writers Workshop.[11]
Damon Knight died 15 April 2002 in Eugene, Lane, Oregon.[12][13]
