Biography

Flag of Hampshire (adopted 2019)
George Knight was born in Hampshire, England.

George was probably born in 1788 and was baptised on 7 December 1788 at Binsted, Hampshire, England the son of James Knight and Catherine.[1][2][3]

George married Elizabeth Comes on 14 November 1813 both of the Parish of Binsted, by Banns with the consent of their parents. The witnesses were Mary Comes and John Bunch.[4][5] George and Elizabeth had twelve children.

At the time of the 1841 census, George was living at Upper Froyle, Hampshire working as an Agricultural Labourer. He was recorded as aged 50, his actual age of about 53 was rounded down. He and his family lived in a place called Kiln Cottage in Upper Froyle that may have been associated with a hop-drying kiln. George and his sons Richard and James were agricultural labourers a labour-intensive and seasonal industry that was poorly paid. His Wife Elizabeth and the younger children were probably employed in a cottage industry.[6]

In the 1851 census George (age 61) was still living with his family in Upper Froyle working as an Agricultural Labourer. The household members were George Knight (61), his wife Elizabeth (58), sons Richard (31), James (29) and Thomas (17) also Agricultural Labourers; Henry (14), a Bricklayer's Labourer; Elizabeth (11), a Scholar; daughter-in-law Mary Ann (24), James's spouse and their children Ellen Hannah (1) and Arthur (2 months).[7]

In the 1861 census George (73) was still an agricultural labourer living with his wife Elizabeth (67) at Privet. His children had by then left home. Living with them as a lodger was his nephew Thomas Furze (40) the son of his older sister Mary who had married John Furze. Next door was his son James (age 40), an agricultural labourer, with his wife Mary Ann and seven children.[8]

George's death at the age of 77 was registered in June 1865 at Alton, Hampshire. He was buried at Froyle on 11 June.[3][9][10]
