Extensive Research

Laura Knight Jadczyk has compiled the most extensive repository of records and research of the Knights of Colonial Virginia.[1] Her research specific to John Knight of Lunenburg, Virginia, is found at John Knight and Jonathan Knight of Lunenburg VA and Granville NC.[2]

Vital Statistics

Name
Middle names are uncommon at this time, and there is no evidence for purported middle names Francis or Hughes, or a suffix of Sr.

These may have been for previously conflated profile John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762).

Birth
His birth date is estimated from his son John's birth, (about' 1710 - average 34 years) = about 1676).

Birth - Not Used Here
Various births are suggested:

  • abt 1690 • Nansemond County, Colony of Virginia
  • abt 1692 • Northumberland County, Colony of Virginia
  • abt 1706 • Surry, Surry, Colony of Virginia

These may have been for previously conflated profile John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762).

Uncertain Existence

This profile is unsourced, hence Uncertain Existence.

Disputed Parents

William Peter Knight (abt.1658-abt.1720) and Mary (Basse) Knight (1662-abt.1680) were previously attached as unsourced parents.

James Knight (abt.1662-abt.1759) and Mary Benn are also purported to be his parents by some.

Previously Conflated

This John Knight profile was previously a duplicate of or conflated with the profile for John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762) of Sussex VA who left a Will in 1762:

  • Both profiles shared the same death date, based on the Will probated 18 February 1762.
  • Both profiles listed the Will.
  • The John Knight profile had attached as children most of the children in the Will.
  • This John Knight profile had attached as children duplicate profiles for two of the children in the Will.
  • Comments attached to these two profiles did not agree as to whether these are the same individual or two individuals.

At the time, this John Knight profile was attached to spouse Elizabeth (Jordan) Knight (1683-1755). LKJ has presented the theory that John Knight was married to Elizabeth Jordan and then to Elizabeth Eppes.

This conflation/duplication was addressed on 9 Dec 2022. This John Knight profile was detached from spouse Elizabeth Jordan, conflated records and biography were deleted, and the profile's identity became father of John Knight of Lunenburg VA who left a Will in 1771. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The DNA tests don't support this line, and the problem is right here in John Knight and Elizabeth Jordan. There are descendants of Captain Peter Knight with Y-DNA tests showing up under this profile. And yet there are also below here the Woodson Knight / Lunenberg line which is not the Captain Peter Knight line.

John Knight (abt.1680-bef.1762) and John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762) are clearly duplicates (focusing on their bio; their children are a mixed story).

I have done extensive research looking for the marriage of John Knight and Elizabeth Jordan. It appears to be unsourced and at best family tradition. I added an identical research note to: John Knight (abt.1680-bef.1762), Elizabeth (Jordan) Knight (1683-1755), and John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762) summarizing what was found.

I also added a research note to John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762) summarizing why it is likely he was married to Elizabeth Eppes. Whether John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762) was married once, twice, or more, can be the topic for a follow-up discussion.

As this John Knight clearly shares the same identity with John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762) (Will, death date based on Will, children from Will), I propose:

1) Move John & Elizabeth Jordan's children William and Anne to John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762) as they appear in the Will and share bio content. Then merge them with duplicated profiles there.

2) Delete Will & Children portion of bio from John Knight (abt.1680-bef.1762) as it is conflated.

3) Review remaining John Knight (abt.1680-bef.1762) profile for anything else conflated that needs to be moved to John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762).

4) Determine whether this profile John Knight (abt.1680-bef.1762) then properly remains here with a new identity as a generation in the Woodson Knights / Lunenburg line, or is detached from the remaining parents and children. It appears the attached parents and 1 child are the only "identity" remaining for this profile.

Thoughts?

Just identifying an theory and not attempting to prove it yet.

Seems like children William Knight (abt.1719-1767) and Anne (Knight) Stokes (abt.1722-1760) are attached to wrong parents and should instead be attached to John Knight (abt.1690-bef.1762)—based solely on the counties they are in.

Then it appears this line of Knights is intended to be the Woodson Knights and should have places Henrico, Goochland, and Lunenburg over 2-3 generations. There are records for a John and William Knight in Goochland, so all the names generally stay the same, but just different people.

See https://laura-knight-jadczyk.com/genealogy/knight-woodson-records.html for these records.

And there is an Elizabeth Jordan who chooses Thomas Randolph (1729) and then John Harris (1730) as her guardian (so between ages 14-21 in these years) in Goochland, so perhaps there is the lead to a John Knight-Elizabeth Jordan marriage.

Are there any records:

1) for Elizabeth Jordan other than her birth record (18 Nov 1683, parents Thomas Jordan and Elizabeth Burgh)?

2) proving the marriage of John Knight to Elizabeth Jordan?

3) describing the "tradition" John Knight married Elizabeth Jordan, daughter of Richard Jordan and Rebecca Ratcliff (Radcliffe). (not the parents attached to her on WikiTree)

4) demonstrating there are two different John Knights in Surry/Sussex Co. in this era, both married to a wife named Elizabeth?

Otherwise, I propose detaching Elizabeth Jordan from this John Knight.

Interestingly, I am a Hughes descendant and have been following DNA matches to figure out that line. They led me here. In that, I am dna related to a person who appears to map up to this John Knight or a different one, who was married to Elizabeth Woodson. The mystery continues!

Are there primary sources showing that there are two different persons named John Knight in Surry County and Sussex County at this time that are being conflated? Or is there a single person, married to Elizabeth Jordan and then Elizabeth Eppes?

The middle name "Hughes" and the parents William Peter Knight (abt.1658-abt.1720) and Mary (Basse) Knight (1662-abt.1680) are unsourced.

I propose removing the middle name and detaching the parents (and documenting in Research Notes)

I recall looking through the Jamestowne Society books and seeing Elizabeth Jordan attached to this John Knight. I don't know if the Jamestowne society has anything to support that other than member trees though. I suspect there probably aren't going to be any definitive answers on Epps vs Jordan.

I'm interested in trying to resolve the conflation of John "Francis" Knight and John Hughes Knight. It has become a sticking point in advancing the family trees of the Virginia Knights.

When the profile of John Hughes Knight was first created in 2011, he was described as (all unsourced): - John Knight Sr. (no middle name Hughes) - born in Sussex Co., VA in 1690 (though it would have been Surry Co.) - son of Elizabeth Jordan Knight

In 2015, he was then associated with the 18 Feb 1762 probate (and will) of John Knight.

In July 2020, the unsourced middle name Hughes was added.

Since 2011, his parents have changed several times, each time unsourced.

What are the essential primary sources that define the "identity" (e.g what we prove with birth certificate and driver license today) of John Hughes Knight? If you had to point to one or just a few sourced facts (and I'm asking you to do so) to prove that John Hughes Knight and John Knight are NOT the same person, what are they?

I have already added a similar set of "identity" facts to the profile of John "Francis" Knight.

Does anyone have a source for the marriage of John Hughes Knight with Elizabeth Jordan?

Does anyone have a source for the marriage of John "Francis" Knight with Elizabeth Eppes?

If they are two different people, what is the basis for associating the 18 Feb 1762 probate of John Knight with one of these two profiles?

Both of these profiles clearly need some work. If the open issues are too complex to quickly resolve and require extensive discussion, I can facilitate moving this discussion to a message board for those that want to collaborate on this conflation.

Thank you, Ken

John Hughes Knight Sr. and John Francis Knight are clearly conflated at some level as they share the same death date, and presumably the same death record—the will dated 7 Feb 1760 and probated 18 Feb 1762 in Sussex County, VA. Knight-940 has the text of the will in the profile. Knight-5256 however has more of the children listed in the will attached as children.

I just added the original source for the will to Knight-940, but I did so merely to point to the source for the text in the profile, NOT to indicate which John Knight the will is associated with.

Which vital statistics for John Hughes Knight Sr. and John Francis Knight clearly deconflate these two individuals. Or are they the same individual? Laura Knight has hypothesized that John Knight of Sussex County was married to Elizabeth Jordan and then to Elizabeth Eppes.

Knight-5256 and Knight-940 appear to represent the same person because: they share the same death date in the same county in Virginia. The difference in their birthdates needs to be rectified.

With the exception of the lack of a mothers name and an additional first name, everything else matches including the wife's name and place of birth, and date & location of death. These should be merged.

Why does he have the same birth year as his mother? Shouldn't this be Elizabeth's Jordan's husband?
