For a half a century or more he was the station depot agent at that place, and both the railway companies as well as the business men of the city had the greatest confidence in him. He was a native of Ireland having been born in Dublin on June 24, 1833. It was in 1850 that he came to America and early made Plymouth his home. When the Sheboygan and Western Railroad was put in to Glenbeulah he became agent here, and when the Milwaukee and Northern now the St Paul railway was constructed, he became the agent for both roads. This position he held for several years, when the work for the St Paul required all of his attention. Owing to declining health he, a few years ago, resigned his place, and in recognition of his faithful and valuable services the company pensioned him.His marriage to Miss Emma Johnson, a daughter of one of the earliest settlers of Plymouth was solemnized in 1864 in the city of Sheboygan. Eight children were born to them. Henry, one of the sons, passed away, while these survive: John Knowd, St. Paul; Mrs. Alice Zinkgraf, Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Nellie Buswell, Depere, Wis; Mrs. Anna Dean, Rexford, Montana; Mrs. Maria Strom Excanaba, Mich; and Miss Myrtle Knowd, at home.Mr. Knowd was a member of the G.A.R., having served his country in Company C, 4th Reg. Wis. Vol. He was also an Odd Fellow.Mr. Knowd had many friends. He was most accomodating, and willing to be of the largest service both to the companies which employed him and to the public. The name John Knowd is synonymous with honesty and uprightness in this community.
