Biography

I have been researching my family off and on since the mid 1990s, more since I retired at the end of 2016. Some of my primary interests are:

• Kolze - I am a descendant of one of three brothers that immigrated from Nienhagen, Amt Neustadt am Rübenberge, Hannover (now Gilten, Heidekreis, Lower Saxony, Germany) to the area of Cook County, Illinois near where Chicago's O'Hare Airport is today in the 1840s. I am also the Coordinator for the Kolze/Koltze One Name Study and am interested in all Kolze's around the world and would like to see if any of the various branches are related. I am (slowly) researching the old church books from Gilten and nearby parishes to better document this family on WikiTree, and to also find connections to other branches of the family and add earlier generations.

• Franzen - I am a descendant of a family that immigrated from Schale (now in North Western Germany) to DuPage County, Illinois near where Chicago's O'Hare Airport is today in the early 1840s. The immigrant ancestors were Johann Bernard Franzen, his wife Anna Adelheid (Moellenthien) Franzen and their son Heinrich Franzen. There were many other Franzen's in the Addison/Bensenville area of DuPage County in the mid/late 1800s and they all appear to be from the same extended family that came from Schale. I am (slowly) reviewing images of the Schale church books on archion.de and updating WikiTree with anything new or different I find. I am also the Coordinator for the Franzen/Frantzen One Name Study

• Eitermann - Also migrated from Schale to DuPage County, Illinois around the same time as the Franzen's (see above). My immigrant ancestors were John Gerhardt Lambert Eitermann and his wife Anna Fenne Maria (Lah) Eitermann. I am currently researching the Eitermann family in the Schale church books.

• Hirst - My branch of the Hirst family immigrated from London, England to San Francisco, California in the late 1880s. Some of the other family members remained in England. My immigrant ancestors were Henry Hirst, and his daughter Isabell Margaret (Hirst) Morton. Henry's wife Mary Ann (Hedgeland) Hirst died in England before they immigrated.

• O'Connor - My GG-Grandmother Isabella (O'Connor) Morton was born in Ireland, possibly in Listowel, County Kerry, around 1836-1840, then married Henry H Morton in Manhattan, New York in 1860. Family story says that her maternal grandfather, a Mr. Reid, brought Isabella and her sisters to New York to marry the sons of an Italian family. Isabella's husband Henry Morton was from Scotland, and I haven't been able to find records of any marriages of O'Connor women to men with Italian sounding names in the New York or New Jersey area around 1860. Isabella and Henry moved to San Francisco, California in the mid-1860s. This is one of my brick walls. DNA suggests that Isabella could have been closely related to Thomas Reginald O'Connor (1825-1906) who was born in Ireland, and lived in Australia, Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California and John O'Connor (abt.1832-1908) who was probably born in Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland, and moved to Portland, Oregon.

• Morton - My GG-Grandfather Henry Morton was apparently born in Scotland around 1835-1840, then came to New York where he married Isabella O'Connor in Manhattan in 1860 (see above). According to family story his father was also named Henry Morton and he ran a draper's shop in Glasgow around 1835. I have not been able to find any records in Scotland that can be tied to this family.

• Garvey - Limerick, Ireland -> St Louis, Missouri My immigrant ancestors were Denis Garvey, his wife Ellen Margaret (Quinlan) Garvey and their son Henry A Garvey

• Matthews - Immigrant ancestors were Oliver Matthews and his wife Elizabeth (Thomas) Matthews, Quakers who came from England to New Castle, Delaware in the late 1600s.

• Kleinow - Immigrant ancestor was Adolph Christian Friedrich "Frederick" Kleinow, born in 1850 in Plath, Mecklenburg, and came to Ohio where he married Mary Elizabeth Brasch in 1871, and later moved to Chicago. Frederick's mother Regina Ernestina Marie (Kleinow) Sternhagen (1828-abt.1883), daughter of David Gottfried Christian Kleinow (1784-1853) also came to Ohio and married there, but Frederick was her only child who lived to adulthood. I am still tracing this family. Other Kleinows immigrated from the area around Plath to Detroit, Michigan, but church book might not go back far enough to make a connection between the families.

• Brasch - Immigrant ancestors were Johann "J.E.W" Brasch, his wife Wilhelmina Sophie Behnken and their children, including Anna Christina (Brasch) Amsler. Johann and Wilhelmina were married in Scharmbeck in the Hannover region of what is now Germany, but were living in the town of Lesum, where some of their children were born, before coming to the United States. In the US they were in Beaver, Clarion, Pennsylvania for a while where daughter Anna Christina married and remained. Later they were in Loraine County, Ohio where Johann married his daughter Mary Elizabeth to Frederick Kleinow (see above). Some of the sons moved to New York state.

• Barbee - I am a descendant of Benjamin Barbee (1759-1814) who was born in Virginia, fought in the American Revolution and moved to Butler County, Ohio. Also, my GG-Grandmother Susan E (Matthews) Garvey's sister Mary J (Matthews) Barbee married William J Barbee (1816-1892), and my G-Grandmother lived with their family for a time in Ghent, Kentucky. The Barbee family is difficult to trace and the internet is full of bad genealogy for the family. I have been slowly trying to cleanup Barbee profiles on WikiTree, and add additional profiles, particular for the Barbees who lived in Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky.

• Paternal relationship is confirmed by an autosomal AncestryDNA test match between Paige Kolze and LS, her 3rd cousin . Their most-recent common ancestors are Dietrich Kolze and Lisette Schluter, the great great grandparents of both Paige Kolze and LS. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 3rd Cousin, based on sharing 77 cM across 3 segments.

• Maternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Paige Kolze and her half second cousin 1X removed, T.C.. Their most-recent common ancestor is Paige's gg-grandfather and T.C.'s great grandfather William Flavious White. Paige and T.C. share 57cM across 4 segments and AncestryDNA shows half second cousin 1X removed in the most likely (37%) group of possible relationships for people sharing this amount of DNA. Note: T.C. is a grandchild of William Flavious White's daughter Willetta May (White) Whiteis.

• Maternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Paige Kolze and her half second cousin 1X removed, J.A.. Their most-recent common ancestor is Paige's gg-grandfather and A.J.'s great grandfather William Flavious White. Paige and A.J. share 69cM across 3 segments and AncestryDNA shows half second cousin 1X removed in the most likely (37%) group of possible relationships for people sharing this amount of DNA. Note: A.J. is a grandchild of William Flavious White's son Virgil Flavious White.
