Tjaart Andries Petrus Kruger was born on June 9, 1829 in Colesberg, Cape Colony, South Africa, son of Casper Jan Hendrik Kruger (1801–1852) and Elsie Francina Steyn (1806–~1834).
Tjaart married Helena Geertruida Erasmus (born on January 12, 1831 in Cradock, Cape Colony; daughter of Daniel Elardus Erasmus and Petronella Catharina (Gous) Erasmus).
Their children were:

- Elsie Francina Kruger (1851–1921)
