Johann Kröckel (né Johannes Kunder) was born out-of-wedlock on 27 May 1830 in Hammelburg, Bavaria, Germany. He was the son and third child of Johannes Kunder, a journeyman bricklayer, and Maria Anna Ruppel. He was baptized the next day by a Franciscan priest at St. Johannes der Täufer Catholic Church in Hammelburg.
His parents were married in 1833, which legitimatized his birth. His biological father passed away sometime thereafter. His mother subsequently married white limer Johann Kröckel in 1852, and Johann ultimately adopted his step-father's surname.
He married Margarethe Beck on 17 July 1860 at St. Johannes der Täufer Catholic Church in Hammelburg. Together they had at least seven children. He supported the family as a white limer (the same occupation as his step-father), and they lived variably in Hammelburg house numbers 292, 293, and 294.
Johann passed away on 10 November 1889 in Hammelburg.
