My Great-great-grandfather, Joseph Henry Lake, was born on 10 January 1857 in Linn county, Iowa [1] His father was Florentine Lake, who was born on 8 February 1832 in Oxford, Coshocton county, Ohio. Florentine’s step-father and mother moved the family from Indiana to Madison county, Iowa about 1852 near the time that Florentine was old enough to be on his own and he then moved to Linn county, Iowa. His mother was Delilah Scott, who was born on 22 February 1835 in Montgomery county, Indiana. Delilah’s family moved to Linn county, Iowa about 1845.
He and his next two siblings, Mary and Harrison, were born in Linn county, my Grt-grt-grandfather, Joe, moved to Hardin county with his family when he was about three years old, in 1860. [2]

When he was 27 years old, he married Mary Helen McConnelogue, daughter of John McConnelogue and Sarah Rogers. She was born on 19 May 1854 in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin. Her family moved to Hardin county, Iowa in 1871. Their marriage was on 16 June 1884. [4] The couple had five children, including Harry, Frank, Alta, Florentine and John. Harry was born in July 1884, Frank was born 23 December 1885 and Alta was born 10 January 1889. It is not known when Florentine and John were born, but neither one was living at the time of the 1900 US census, and probably died in infancy. [5]
Joe moved the family from Hardin to Hancock[6] and to Kossuth[7] counties in Iowa, and then to North Dakota, near Jamestown[8] before moving to Thayer county, Nebraska about 1903. They may have lived in additional places, but records have been found only for these. Joe owned 80 acres of land near Hebron, and was a farmer all his life.
By the time the Civil War ended, Joe was only 8 years old and so he never served in the military. During the Depression, Joe and Mary survived much like many other farm families did, by producing their own food. Joe and Mary’s oldest son died at age sixteen, in 1900. His death may have been a reason why they moved south to Nebraska a few years after this, [9] in 1904. In 1902, Joe’s wife’s father died in Iowa and that triggered one of the bigger events in Joe’s life. Mary’s sister, Retta Borden, wanted to build a house on their property and have them be the care-takers of it for her. The house was completed in 1906 and Retta arrived for a visit. She was so unimpressed with either the house, its location or her brother-in-law, or possibly all three, that she vowed never to return. She arranged to have the deed to the house put in her sister’s name. Joe was so ungrateful for it that he never fixed anything and never painted it. He also resented never being able to move again[10][11][12] because his wife would never part with the gift from her sister. [13].

Joe died on 2 May 1942 in Thayer county, near Hebron. [14] He is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, about a half-mile north of Hebron. At the time of his death his son and daughter each had three children, plus there were three great-grandchildren. His gravestone is inscribed "LAKE, Joseph H. 1857-1942, Mary H. 1854-1947." Other family who are laid to rest in the same cemetery are his wife, Mary, son Frank and his wife, Nell and two grandsons, Wallace and Gene with his wife, Irene.
