Death Claims a Well Known Citizen.
Allen Lake passes away after a brief illness of Bright's Disease.
An old and respected resident of this town. Allen Lake died at his home one mile west of this village on Thursday morning July 7th. The cause of death was Bright's disease and Mr. Lake's age was 72 years. Funeral services were held at St. John's Catholic Church at ten o'clock, Saturday morning. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Lake's illness was of about two weeks duration and from the start was so severe that practically no hope was entertained for his recovery. He had been in failing health for two or three years past and he was well known for his one robust physique had become weakened by the inroads of disease. Mr. Lake was one the best known residents of Galen, having resided on the farm where he died for more than thirty years past. He was favorably known to a large circle of aquaintances and hosts of warm friends. He was a reputable citizen, a kind and obliging neighbor and a man who was generally respected by everybody who knew him. During his early life he had been a boatman and after settling on his farm, performed much arduous work in clearing it and bringing it to it's present condition. Of late years he did only the lighter work of the farm and was frequent visitor of the village after attending to his duties. His familiar figure will be greatly missed. Besides his widow, he is survived by five children, Allen and Charles and Mrs. C. S. Dennis of Chicago, David of Clyde and William of Kansas City.

Research Notes

Jo Ann Brohl to Linda Carr:................. Hi Linda, Just a quick note. I had time in the Family History Library before we flew to Maui. I found the film of church records for St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, of Clyde, N. Y. It covered the years from 1868 - 1910. I found this baptism dated 7 November 1869 for Allen John Lake, age 35 years old son of Well Lake and Harriet Sabine, sponsors M. and Mary O'Grady. No mention of Elicher in these records for him.......... I did find a baptism, same church, for Elija Allen Lake, June 19, 1887, son of William Lake and Marzella Hughes, he was born 25 May 1887. The WW I Draft Registration has this Allen as Elicher Allen Lake. .................... Jo Ann
Reply from Marianne Green, dated 3/1/09.... Allen John Lake is not his real name. In the Catholic Church when you are baptized you have to have a saints name. Elicher Allen is not a saints name so I suspect that the priest insisted on a saints name and so that is why it is listed as Allen John Lake. We also take a saints name when we are confirmed. It is Catholic tradition. My grandmother said that Elicher Allen Lake (her brother) was named after his grandfather. The name is pronounced Elisha so it has been misspelled in many documents. Not only did Uncle Al hate the name Elicher but so did his grandfather. I only found one record a state census that had E. Allen Lake on it. ............................The Lake family was not Catholic but when E. Allen Lake married Margaret O'Brien then that changed. She must have been a wonderful influence on her family to get them all baptized after her death! What a legacy!...............Marianne
