Biography

Flag of Derbyshire (adopted 2006)
William Lamb was born in Derby, Derbyshire, England.

William was born 13 November 1864 at 29 Goodwin Street, Derby. He was the son of John Lamb and Hannah Toon.[1][2]

William Lamb was a chimney sweep (1891-1911).

On the 5th of April, 1891, William was living with Hannah and 2 of her children (John & Rose). Hannah was listed as his 'housekeeper'. [2]

The couple married 6 months later, on 8 October 1891, in the All Saints Parish Church, Derby. However, Hannah actually gave her name as Ann Banner (her sister's married name) and said she was a widow. The witnesses were John Lamb & Hannah Lamb. [3]

The 1911 census stated that his marriage to Hannah had so far lasted 28 years and that they had had 10 children together, 5 of which were still living.[4] (This would mean they were together since 1883. It is possible that some of the children were born to Alexander Rollett.)

Research Notes

Messages from RR (grandaughter) sent 2 Aug 2016

"No, all I ever assumed as that he died,I was never told anything about it,just that she had been wed beforeand the surname.I know there was at least one son [John] because Dad used to visit him in Gisbourne St Derbytaking me with him...

And Hannah's maiden name is stated as Bates,I honestly can't imagine what happened to the Rollett husband, when I was a child girls were never told anything important." - RR

"I also met a woman not much older than I was who said she was my cousin, named Ann I think...

There was an older lady who had a small sweet shop near St Dunstan,s school when I was very young on my way to school ,used to call me in and give me sweets, I always thought she was some kind of relative." - RR

"... my Dad had a sister we called Sally. She married a man named Woodward who left her and went to America. During the war an American soldier had a piece in the Derby Evening telegraph asking for her, But my Dad wouldn't let us answer it." - RR

"My grandfather died with throat cancer... It must have been in the late twenties. Or early thirties...

I don't remember either of them although it,s said I used to breakfast with Grandma... He must have been in Derby because my Mother said she used to change his dressing every day" -RR
