Hi,

Some info I have researched on Garrett Lambert's lineage: It is believed that Garrett Lambert was the s/o John & Jane Lambert. Although his name, like most of John Lambert’s children, was not listed in his father’s will. There is other evidence that lends credibility to this claim. The first listing of the name Garrett Lambert is found in Hu Maxwell’s History of Randolph County, West Virginia. Maxwell stated, In July, 1788 the court aimed a blow at idleness in these words: ‘Ordered that a writ go forth to bring Grant Lambert before the next August court to show cause why he does not betake himself to lawful employment and demean himself as required by the laws of the Commomwealth.’ The author commented, He probably betook himself to lawful employment, or took himself out of the county.

The name probably should have read Garrett Lambert. No person was recorded in Randolph County at that time with the name Grant Lambert. There was but one Lambert family, and it is assumed that due to the difficulty in reading the faded and poor handwriting of the original court entry the name was mistakenly recorded as “Grant.” Also, Maxwell made a valid assumption when he wrote, “He probably betook himself to lawful employment or took himself out of the county.” Later records show Garrett migrated to Kentucky by 1791. The incident that possibly help motivate Garrett Lambert to relocate to Kentucky was another court action. An entry from the Pendelton County Court Order Book in 1791 listed Garrett Lambert as the plaintiff against John Nelson for assault and battery (This was the same John Nelson who earlier accused John Lambert of theft). The records show Garrett failed to appear in court but “his next friend Jane Lambert” was present in his behalf. The identity of Jane Lambert remains unclear. Jane Lambert was both the name of Garrett’s mother and his sister.

The exact year that Garrett left Pendelton County for Kentucky is not known but his brothers Abraham Lambert and James Lambert are listed on the 14 July, 1789 Nelson, Kentucky Tax List. Matthias Lambert, another brother, located in Clark County, Kentucky by 1791. It is believed that Garrett either accompanied his brothers or followed shortly thereafter. The first recorded date that confirmed Garrett’s presence in Kentucky was the 1805 Tax List for Nelson Co KY. He was listed as a white male with no land. His brother, Abraham, was also listed with 82 acres. It would be my guess that he was living with his brother at the time. This listing was done by Anthony Foster and was submitted to the court 8 Jul 1805. It appears to be made up of people in the southern end of the county including most of Bardstown. (The Nelson Pioneer, Vol. XI, No. 1, Summer, 1987, p. 12).

In July 1806 Garrett Lambert was charged with assult and battery against Cornelius Croxton in Nelson Co KY. The charges were later dropped in 1808.

Garrett Lambert was listed in the 1820 Hardin Co KY census as 45+; 1M 10-15; !F 10-15; 1F 26-45.

On 30 Aug 1825 in Nelson Co KY, Garrett Lambert makes an indenture with Joseph Brown whereby Garrett is advanced a sum of money for 284 gallons of whiskey and 5000 pounds of pork. The agreement is secured by Garrett’s collateral of his farm located on Simpson’s Creek consisting of 2 tracts of 145 acres each, Lambert lives on one, and 50 acres for which Lambert holds bond from William Yates and Cornelius Vanarsdale plus 43 1/2 acres that Garrett Lambert bought from William Minor. (Land deed from Nelson Co KY).

On 20 Sep 1828 Garrett Lambert enters into an indenture with John W. Green [Garrett’s son-in-law] and Elijah lambert whereby he mortgages farm for $450. Garrett was in debt to Cornelius Croeston. (Nelson Co Courthouse records).

The 1830 Nelson Co KY census listed Garrett Lambert and his brother Elijah Lambert as residents. Those in the Garrett Lambert household were: 1M, 5-10; 1M 10-15; 1M 20-30; 1M 50-60: 3F 0-5; 1F 20-30.

In 1840 the Nelson Co Census listed Garrett Lambert as between ages 70-80 and his spouse between 80-90. Thus, his 3rd marriage was in 1841 so this spouse was Ruth Ann [Duffy] Lambert who died about 1840-41. (1840 Nelson Co KY Census, per Nelson Co Genealogical Round Table, Bardstown, KY, p. 44).

Garrett was enumerated in the 1850 Daviess Co., KY., Census as 87, born VA. and living in the HH of his son, Elijah Lambert, 48. Also in the HH was Sarah 45, Milton T. (census error has age at 25) 19, Melvina 16, Susan 14, Dorcas 10. [2]

The marriage of Garrett Lambert and Dorcas Yates was on 11 Jun., 1794 in Woodford Co., KY., with the bondsman listed as Matthias Lambert. The ceremony was performed by J. Dupuy. (Willard Library, Evansville, IN, Woodford Co., KY, Marriages 1788-1851, p. 18, RFH Ky 976.9465 Bell, Compiled by Annie Walker Burns Bell).

Garrett married 2nd Ruth Ann Duffy on 12 Apr 1816 in Hardin Co KY. [3]

A 3rd marriage of Garrett Lambert and Elizabeth Adams on 2 Sep., 1841 in Nelson Co., KY. He would have been age 78.
