Biography

Dutton Lane was born about 1745, probably in Baltimore County, Maryland, the son of Samuel Lane and Jane Corbin. There are records of Dutton being in Greene County, Tennessee, and Scott County, Virginia, in the early 1800's. It appears that Dutton and his brother, Corbin, probably came to the area together from Bedford County, Pennsylvania, possibly before Greene County was formed from Washington County, North Carolina. Dutton and his family lived in Greene County until about 1800, when they moved to Scott County, Virginia. Some of his family stayed in Scott County and are among the Scott County Lanes.

Dutton was married twice, first to Mary (last name unknown) and then to Keziah (last name unknown), who died in Scott County at the age of 100. Dutton is thought to have had the following children: Joseph, Samuel, William, Susannah, Nancy (m. Stephen Loveall), Dutton Jr, Benjamin, Kezia (m. John Hood), Abraham, John, Catherine (m. Henry Starnes), and Mary (m. Fields Davis).

Dutton died probably after 11 March 1828 in Scott County, Virginia, where he and Keziah (spelled "Kesear" on the deed) recorded a deed to Benjamin Lane, probably their son.

Research Notes

Dutton Lane (about 1745-after 1828) has often been confused with other Dutton Lanes. Tidence Lane had a son by the same name and about the same age, and Tidence's brother Dutton also had a son by the same name. There were also the Dutton Lane (b. 1768) who was the son of Samuel Lane and Mary Corbin; the Dutton Lane (1732-1758) who was the son of Richard Lane and Sarah Fuller; and the Dutton Lane (1721-1795) who was the son of Dutton Lane and Diana Boring.
