William and his twin brother, Isaac, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1833. William and his brother started for Missouri. Upon their arrival, his twin, Isaac, was severely injured at Haun’s Mill, Missouri. (Isaac later recovered). From there, William went to Nauvoo. He arrived in Nauvoo July 3, 1843. While in Nauvoo, he met and married Elizabeth Scearce. He was among those driven out of Nauvoo in 1846. He lived in Council Bluffs, and in the spring of 1847, they left with the Saints to travel west. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on October 1, 1847. In the fall of 1850, under the leadership of the Apostle, George Albert Smith, he was called to go south to Parowan to help open up the area. They had problems with some of the Indians. After some time, they moved south to Harrisburg where they raised grapes, cotton, and indigo. William remained active in the church until his death in 1891 .
