Biography

Theodore Alexander "Ted" Lapham was born on 3 June 1910 in Alliance, Box Butte, Nebraska the eighth child of Horace Irving Lapham (1869-1927) and Anna Margaret Leishman (1875-1951).[1] [2]

When Ted was about a year old, his father moved his family from Nebraska to Viola, Idaho, where they remained until about 1917 when they moved to Spokane, Washington.[3] At the age of about ten, Ted worked in Spokane, Washington as a newsboy, while his father was away working in Oregon.[2] Following his father's early death in 1927, Ted lived with his older brother, Charles, in Portland, Oregon, where he worked as cook.[4]

In 1932, Ted married Alice Lucretia Wellin (1916-1985), the daughter of Wilhelm Percy Wellin (1895-1977) and Lois Beatrice Agee (1897-1983), in Portland, Oregon.[5] At some point following the birth of their first daughter, Gloria, in 1933 Ted and Alice appear to have separated and possibly divorced. They were remarried on 25 September 1935 in Colville, Stevens, Washington.[6] Ted and Alice had two more daughters following this, Margaret and Jacqueline.

Before their marriage ended in divorce in about 1944, Ted and Alice lived primarily in the Portland, Oregon area.[5] However, they also lived in Spokane, Washington.[6] In 1935, they lived in Idaho, where Ted worked as a miner.[7] [8] While living in the Portland area, Ted worked as a grinder in a foundry for Public Works in 1940.[7] However, for much of his working life, he was employed as a city bus driver in Portland.[5]

During World War II, Ted did not serve in the military.[5] Although a significant number of men were drafted during the war, the draft of fathers with dependent children was usually avoided.[9] Many men and women who did not serve, however, were involved in essential production in various industries that were vital to the War effort.[9] Although it is not completely clear what Ted did during this time, it is known that he did work in a foundry in the 1940s.[7] It is possible his work during the war was similar. His wife, Alice, worked as a welder in the shipbuilding industry in Oregon.[10] [11]

Following his divorce, and towards the end of his life, he worked as a carpenter and contractor building homes in Oregon.[5] [1] Ted passed away on 15 November 1955 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon from congestive heart failure due to an enlarged heart and subacute nephritis.[1] At the time of his death, he appears to have been either visiting relatives in Portland or seeking medical attention there, for he lived in Milwaukie, Clackamas, Oregon.[1] He was buried on 17 November 1955 at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.[1] [12]

Although it is unclear, it is likely that Ted was brought up in the The Seventh-day Adventist Church as a child, as his mother was actively involved in this church.[5] Later in life, it is unclear what religious beliefs Ted held or what church he attended, if any.[5]
