Biography

According to his modern gravestone, Jacob Lash Jr. was born in 1752.[1] He was probably the son of Jacob Lash, who arrived in America at the Port of Philadelphia in September 1752, so if the gravestone is correct Jacob Jr. may have been born in Germany, at sea, or shortly after his parents arrived in America.[2]

In August 1774, there are two men named Jacob Lash appearing on the tax lists in Newton township, Sussex County, New Jersey. One is likely this Jacob, and the other his father Jacob Lash, Sr..[3]

Jacob likely married his first wife, possibly Elizabeth Yost, in Sussex County, New Jersey, in about 1775. He son Peter was born in Sussex County, New Jersey, on 25 Mar 1778.[4] His deceased son Jacob is listed first in his will, suggesting he may have been born before Peter, or in about 1776.[5]

Jacob Lash Jr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A066889.

Not long after that, however, Jacob Jr. appears to have headed west to the remote western Pennsylvania frontier. In October 1781, Jacob appears on the muster rolls of the 5th Battalion of the Militia for Washington County, Pennsylvania, serving in Thomas Parkeson's Company under Lt. Col. Thomas Cooke.[6] Several other members of his family would later also migrate from Sussex County, New Jersey to Washington County, Pennsylvania.

On 10 April 1797, he may have married (if so, likely second) Catherine Youst, just west of Washington County, in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia).[7]

In 1806, Jacob begins appearing on the tax lists across the Ohio River from Washington in Belmont County, Ohio, where his brother Abraham also begins appearing around the same time. Jacob appears on the tax lists in Peas or Pease township several times between 1806-1810.[8] He continues to appear in Peas/Pease township in 1820[9] and in 1830.[10]

Jacob died in 1836 in Belmont County, Ohio, and is buried in the Farmington Cemetery in Barton, Belmont County.[1]

Jacob made his will in Belmont County, Ohio, on 16 September 1834, and it was probated in Belmont County on 12 September 1836.[5] In it he names his wife "Elisabeth" and the following children:

Research Notes

Marriages

Jacob is widely identified as the Jacob Lash who married "Catherine Youst" in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on 4 December 1797.[7] If this is correct, he appears to have married at least twice and some researchers appear to conflate his wives. He would have been about 45 at the time of this marriage and it occurred after the birth of most of his children, indicating that if this is the correct Jacob Lash, he was likely previously married to an unknown first wife who was the mother of most of his children.

However, in his will made in 1834, he identifies his wife as "Elisabeth Lash."[5] His modern gravestone identifies his wife as "Elizabeth Yost." It is unclear whether this claimed maiden name is based on the 1797 marriage record or some other source; it may be an error. However, the gravestone identifies "Elizabeth Yost" as the mother of all of his children. If the Elizabeth named in his will is the mother of all his children, then Elizabeth and the Catherine Yost who married Jacob Lash in 1797 must be two different people, and Jacob and Elizabeth likely married in New Jersey in about 1775.

It is possible that Jacob married three times: in that case, the unknown first wife was the mother of most of his children; Catherine Youst/Yost died between their marriage in 1797 and 1834, when he made his will; and the "Elisabeth" named in his will was a third wife.

Another possibility (maybe the most likely) is that the "Jacob Lash" who married Catherine Youst in 1797 was Jacob, the son of this Jacob Lash, identified in this Jacob's will as deceased but with surviving children in 1834. In this case, the Elizabeth named in his will might be the mother of his children, and her maiden name might have also been Yost, but this is all uncertain.

Proof of Paternal Relationship

He is commonly identified by researchers as a son of Jacob Lash, but no clear documentation of this connection has been found.

The following facts support his identification as a son of Jacob Lash: common name; repetition of name Jacob in later generations; birth in Sussex County, New Jersey; common migration pattern with other potential children of Jacob.

Disputed Mother

Some researchers incorrectly identify the mother of Jacob Lasch as Elizabeth Cobb, who was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony, married Nathaniel Atkins there, and appears to have lived her whole life on Cape Cod. She was not the wife of Jacob Lash. For additional detail, see her profile.

Other Possible Children

The following additional children are identified without source in his FamilySearch profile:

  • Barbara Lash 1780-1781
  • John Johannes Lash 1781-1782
  • Sarah Sally Lash 1795-1873
