Biography

"Luther Caleb Lay, who born on this date in 1841 in Battle Creek, Calhoun CO, MI to Benjamin and Mary Turner Lay. He was the youngest of 12 children and the 4th son. He spent his childhood in MI with several extended family members living nearby. LC's father died when he was 3 and his mother when he was 10. Later he would move to be near his oldest brother, Joseph. In the 1860 census he is living in Arapahoe CO Southpark KS (which is now part of Colorado near Denver). He worked there in a silver mine. In the late 60's he moved with his brother Joseph to Buda, IL and in the Spring of '72 came by horseback to Ringgold CO IA where he met and married Sarah Jane Irving. Between 1876 and 1892 they had 9 children. LC was a horse trader and a farmer owning several farms. I don't think that farming ever really appealed to him because the story is that "he retired at 50 when the boys were old enough to take over". At that time the boys were 0-12 so perhaps the story was "retired in his 50's". He was widowed in 1911 and lived another 22 years dying shortly before his 92nd birthday on 3 Mar 1933 in Mt Ayr IA." by Mary Lay-Stephenson "LC and Sarah Jane Irving Lay. They were married on this date in 1875 at her parents' (Charles Hood and Mary Jane Pugh Irving) home by Rev Dishler. She was 24 and he was 34. They lived all their married life in Ringgold CO IA both near Wishard Chapel and south of Mt Ayr with the exception of a short time around 1910 in SW MO (Sheridan, Jasper, Missouri). Four daughters and five sons (including my grandpa Homer Lay) were born between 1876 and 1892. All but the youngest lived to adulthood. Sarah Jane died in 1911 and LC in 1933" by Mary Lay-Stephenson
