In 1747 he and his children were named as beneficiaries and he the executor in the last will of his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth Taylor died about September 1747;[4] her last will was filed in Richmond County, Virginia, and stated:

In the name of God Amen, I, Elizabeth Taylor, of North Farnham Parish, being of sound mind and memory, thanks be to God for it, I do nominate and appoint this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following. I give my soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried as my Executor hereafter named shall think fit.
ITEM It is my wish and desire that all my wearing apparel be equally divided between my two daughters, Dorothy Croucher and Sary Ellate, and my daughter Dorothy to have her choice.
ITEM I give to my great granddaughter Betty Lee, daughter to my grandson Tom Lee, one cow and calf, bed, rug, blanket, and three pairs of sheets, my Prayer Book, one hound, one yew, one lamb, pewter bason, my grate trunk, long iron pot, frying pan, my metal salt seller and looking glass.
ITEM I give to my great grandaughter Ann Lee, daughter of my son William Lee, cow and calf, yew and lamb, pewter bason and my small bag.
ITEM To my great grandaughter Lucy Lee, daughter of Dorothy, one cow and calf, one yew and lamb, and my small pewter bason, and my little trunk.
ITEM To my great grandson Richard Lee, son of Dorothy . . ..
ITEM I give to my grandson William Lee all the rest of my Estate I have not named, and appoint my grandson William Lee my whole and sole Ex. of my Last Will and Testament.
In witness hereunto set my hand and fix my seal this 11th day of May, 1747.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Lee-6168 and Lee-3394 appear to represent the same person because: based on daughter, these were intended to be the same person

Lee-29293 and Lee-3394 appear to represent the same person because: Although not much may seem to match, this is a duplicate parent without much information and no sources; the wives and other family members are also duplicates- some of which are already set to merge. A couple had been set as rejected matches, but they are clearly meant to represent the same ancestor. Please merge.

Comment below does not make sense, as the will gives Elizabeth wearing apparel to all the "women" in her family, including her great granddaughters Betty, Ann and Sarah (daughters of her grandson, William)

Elizabeth Taylor's will sure makes it seem that son William isn't yet born in 1743 when he was supposedly born here on wikitree (or maybe she didn't want to give anything to a four year old). But, if she's naming her great grandchildren in age order, as seems highly probable, then some of the other dates for William and Dorothy's children are probably out of whack.

for eventual wife Mary Thornton, "Mary Thornton may have been the cousin mentioned by Anne Gower Singleton in her will of 1734." (see here).

"The 1742 account of the estate of Anne Singleton paid William Lee." (this is evidence of the possible first wife sometimes rumored, who would have been parent of Williams children before this date). (see here).

Give me a day, I want to go back through Vicky Reany Paulson's book. I think that we have multiple Williams mixes up here.

I wonder if this is where the Mary Waddell comes from. If so, then it looks like they're talking about a different William Lee. "WILLIAM LEE known as the "Waterman" and his wife Mary. He gave "Bridge North" & "Additions" to his son William Lee Jr. WILLIAM LEE, JR known as the "Planter" born ca 1704 and died in Nov 1775 Dorchester Co., MD. He married either Mary Waddell or Mary Pinder. They had Edward, John, William born 19 Dec 1748, Abraham born 1745, Sarah who married Levin Mills, Mary who married a ? Willibie and Hall Lee." --a discussion forum post

Couple concerns: the numbering of William Lees is controversial, and I think we should avoid it, b/c two theories have been floated which impact the numbering scheme. Can we remove the suffix?

Two: is there any decent evidence for Mary Waddell as spouse? I see Mary Thornton (and possibly a separate earlier wife "Anne" (unknown) who so far seems like a rumor. One unreliable source has W. Hanks and Mary Thornton married 16 Dec 1728, but then I see "William Lee (note half-brother of same name) b. 12 Oct 1729, Derry, Ulster, Ireland d. Chatham Co, NC m2. Ann / Anne ???, 16 Dec 1728, Richmond Co, VA b. ca 1706, Richmond Co, VA d. < 1764" here, and so this seems mysterious.

In either case, who is Mary Waddell? Can we remove her?
