He was baptised on 30 June 1756 at the Harlingen Dutch Reformed Church, Milston (Harlingen) Somerset, New Jersey, son of Abraham and Elisabeth "Lifever'.[1]
Minard Lefever (1753-1832) served as private under Capt. Peter Vorhies, Col. Matthias Ogden's 1st regiment, New Jersey Line. He was wounded in the battle of Monmouth, 1778, and later served under other commands. He was born in France [sic = grandfather was born in France]; died in Fredericktown, Ohio. [citation needed]
The record states Minard served under Capt. Peter Vrooms in 1st Jersey Regiment, commanded by Col. Ogden. It states Minard LeFever was honorably discharged at Elizabethtown, N.J. Minard LeFever re enlisted in June 1789 in the Company Commanded by Capt. Joseph Clusion and Col. Seally in the Jersey Continental Establishment. Minard LeFever filed for a pension on 15 Mar 1830 at the age of 75 while living with his son, James LeFever in Knox Co., Ohio. The pension file contains depositions given by Minard LeFever and his son, James LeFever. These depositions list Minard's belongings as being: 1 old wagon, worth about ; about 5 to 7 head of horned cattle; about 10 or 12 country sheep (common breed); 2 beds and some bedding; some other articles of household furniture not exceeding in value .00. It also states that his wife died in October 1822.[2]
"Minard LaFever served in the active military forces from New Jersey during the Revolutionary War, 1775-1783, as follows: Private, Second Regiment, Somerset County Militia; in active service with Capt. Peter D. Vrooms Company, at Millstone, March 26 to April 3, 1777; in detachment commanded by Capt. John Sebring, May 30, 1778. In active service, Capt. John Sebring's Company, Colonel Sylvanus Seely's Regiment, July 31 to August 23, 1780. Private, Capt. Elias Longstreet's Company, First Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line; enlisted from Capt, Rynear Staat's Company, Second Regiment, Somerset County Militia, May 2, 1778, for nine months; also served under Capt. Peter Voorhees; was discharged Feb. 27, 1779. Rec'd Cert. #166, dated may 10, 1784, signed by Wm. Verbryck, for the deprecation of his Continental pay in the Somerset County Militia." In his son James' deposition of 27 Dec 1830, James stated that he had been keeping his own house since about 1820, and that his mother and father commenced living with him circa 1821. James stated that he had been supporting his parents since that time without remuneration. James further stated that his mother had died in Oct 1822 and that the frailty of his father Minard had rendered Minard unable to do any work towards paying for his maintenace since that time.[3]
27 Feb 1837 : Ohio, Knox County, Ohio, Court Minutes, Page 128. Transcription: "Satisfactory proof was given to the Court that Minard Lefever a Revolutionary pensioner died on the 1st of April 1834, and that the following are the names of his children and heirs at law to wit, John Lefever, Maria Cornwall intermarried with Elihu Cornwall, William Lefever, Isaac Lefever, Anna Kirkpatrick married to xxx Andrew Kirkpatrick, Abraham Lefever, Hannah Stevison married to George Stevison, James Lefever, Diana Peet married to Thompson Peet, and Rebecca Williams married to William Williams; And it was on motion ordered that an entry thereof be made on the Journal of this Court and that a certificate of the same issue upon the request of the said heirs."
Various records (no primary sources) state that he was born in France, or that his grandfather was born there. No extant records have been located to indicate this.
He is not to be confused with Minard (LeFevre) LeFever (1744-1800), his first cousin. He also lived in New Jersey.
