Biography

Conrad Leichleiter was the eighth child and seventh son of Johann Conrad Leichleiter and Maria Barbara (Muller) Leichliter. Conrad's oldest brother was Johann Jacob Leichleiter, who inherited their father's land in Frederick County, Maryland. On March 1, 1787, Conrad, his brother Johann Peter purchased the land described as all the tract of land called 'Green Springs', all of 'Small Street', and part of 'The First Dividend' for their mother.

In either 1786 or 1787, in Frederick County, Maryland, Conrad married Anna Margaretha FROSHOUR (1769-1843) daughter of Jacob Froschauer and Anna Maria (Gernhart) Froschauer. Conrad and Anna Margaretha "Margaret," moved to Jefferson County, West Virgina, and Johann Peter moved to Hampshire County, West Virginia.

At the death of the mother, the land in Frederick County Maryland was equally divided between Conrad and Peter, who in turn sold the land in 1803 and 1806. In 1810, the Census of Jefferson county, Virgnia showed Conrad Lichlider (born circa 1760) with a family of 4 males under 10; 3 males 10 10 to 16; 1 male 16 to 26; 1 male 45 & up (Conrad) 2 females under 10; 1 female 10 to 16; 1 female 16 to 26; and 1 female 25 to 45. Jefferson county, Virginia (became West Virginia in 1863) The Church of the Latter Day Saints (The Mormans) have transcribed his name as "Coonrod Leeghlider" [1]

In 1813, Conrad and his brother, George bought an estate in Jefferson County, West Virginia, now on the National Historical List. The 218 acre farm, 'Springdale' on Flowing Springs Road 1/2 mile south of Shepherdstown, was appraised at $40 per acres, worth $8720 circa 1845. Springdale consisted of stone house, slaves, orchards, and a race track. The house is According to a descendant in Jefferson Co., the same land today (2003) would be worth between 1 and 2 million dollars. [2]

Conrad and Margaret had the following children:

  • Jacob Licklider (1788 - 1875) married Susan(na) Dust and lived in Darke county, Ohio (1850 census)
  • Conrad Licklider (1790 - 1821) married Ruhannah Moler, daughter of George Adam Moler and Mary Banks, died in Ohio
  • Susan Licklider (1791 - 1875) married Samuel Darke Engle
  • Daniel Licklider (1793 - 1867) married Elizabeth Giltner, lived in Bourbon county, Kentucky
  • Elizabeth Licklider (1793 - 1820) married Jacob Staley
  • Henreich "Henry" Licklider (1796 - 1868) married Maria Moler, daughter of Frederick Moler and Hannah (Griffith) Moler
  • Adam Licklider (1798 - 1868) married Elizabeth Powell
  • Anna Margaretha Licklider (1799 - 1879) married Daniel Moler, son of Michael Moler and Mary Griffith
  • Rebecca Licklider, married name is Moler
  • George Licklider (1804 - 1892) married Jane Melvin, cousin of a different Jane Melvin, who married George's brother Thomas
  • Anna Mary Leichleiter (1805 - 1846) married David Hoffman
  • Solomon Lewis Licklider (1807 - 1887) married three times
  • Samuel Licklider (1809 - 1889) married Mary Ellen
  • Thomas Licklider (1811-1882) married Jane Melvin, cousin of Jane Melvin, who married Thomas' brother, George
  • Susannah Barbara Licklider (1813 - 1855) married John Ronemous

In his will, Conrad left all of his property and monies to his widow, Margaret, and after her death, the properties were to be sold, and distributed equally to his children or heirs.

Conrad and Anna Margaretha are buried in St. Peter's Lutheran Cem., Shepherdstown, WV. (FH18, MDFR2-3, WVJE8-11) [3]

"Conard Leiklity" on the United States of 1800, living in Emmitsburg, Frederick county, Maryland may well be this Conrad Leichliter. There is an image of the actual census record on FamilySearch.com [4]
