Biography

Johannes Leichleiter (aka Lechleider) was born circa 1750, in Berks county, Pennsylvania, a son of Johann Conrad Leichleider and Maria Barbara (Miller) Leichleider. Johannes married Anna Maria Holtzman (1752-?) in 1772. The marriage is recorded in the church records of the Old Monancacy Church, now an Evangelical Church, of Frederick county, Maryland.

  • "Johannes Lechleuter, Conrad Lechleuter's second legitimate single son and Anna Maria Heolzmaennin, Jacob Fridrich Hlzmann's first legitimate single daughter. Proceedings July 19, July 22, and July 26, 1772." [1]

By 1783, this family had moved into Shenandoah county, Virginia and appear on the tax list with six in the family. Johannes and Anna Maria had the following children:

  • Charlotte Leichleiter
  • Johan Frederick Lechleiter, born January 13, 1774, in Frederick county, Maryland baptized in April, 1774, in the same church where his parents were married, died 1831, in Jefferson county, Tennessee, married Margaret Denton, a daughter of John Denton, II, and Ann Margaret Weaver
  • Johann Jacob Leichleiter, born 1777
  • Anna Mary Leichleiter, born September 10, 1778
  • Susannah Leichleiter, born September 12, 1784, baptized September 30, 1784, in Shenandoah, Virginia, Witnesses were Adam Lechleuten and his wife, Catharine
  • John Leichleiter, born May 14, 1787, in Hampshire county, Virginia
  • George Leichleiter, born between 1791 and 1793. "In Graham's work he lists George born in 1791, in Rockingham, Virginia"

Johannes Leichleiter died in 1830, in Jackson county, Virginia. (Note: this area became part of West Virginia, when that state was formed in 1865) [2]
