Sally died in 1892 and was originally buried at Old Methodist Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland, and was disinterred from there and buried at Oaklawn Cemetery on 23 June 1922.[9] Sallie is buried in the plot with her daughter, Margaret Saunders Swanner, and granddaughter, Mary T. Swanner Gabler Goldschmidt, at Oak Lawn Cemetery.[10]

On her death certificate her surname is spelled Layton. That information was provided by daughter Margaret. However, Sarah was born in or near Alleghany County, Virginia, and at that time there were no families named Layton. Census records list several Leighton families. Sarah could not read or write and therefore might not have known the spelling of the family name.
