Biography

When William Monroe Lemons was born in 1801 in Tennessee, his father, Levi, was 19 and his mother, Mary, was about 16. It is possible he was born either in Carter or Claiborne County. Levi was listed on the 1800 tax list for Carter County and William's brother George lists his birth in Claiborne County. William was married to Delila Holloway in Rhea County on September 23, 1826. They bought land from his cousin Reuben Lemmons in McMinn County that same year near Cog Hill. They had nine children.

He is listed on several censuses as a blacksmith and gun maker. No military service has been found for William, but it is probable that he made guns during the civil war. It is also probable that he was forced to work for the Confederate Army because Cog Hill was in occupied territory and we know his brother George escaped north to fight for the Union Army.

After Anna died, William moved to Benton, about 10 miles south but in Polk County. He then married Isabelle McNelly in 1869 in Benton, Tennessee, a war widow with 3 young children. William died in 1884 and is buried in the Benton Cemetery next to his second wife on the right, and his brother George in the row behind.

Please ensure that DNA matching information for at least two testers is cited under Sources for each parent marked as "confirmed with DNA," including where the DNA was matched, the amount of shared DNA, and the predicted relationship.

You can see what is required under the DNA Confirmation topic of WikiTree's Help pages.

The "confirmed with DNA" relationship indicator should not be set before the necessary DNA confirmation information has been added to the profile.
