John was the son of John Godfrey Levensaler of Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine and Katherine Achorn Levensaler of Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine. Katherine and John were married on 08 January 1799 in Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine. Katherine and John had ten children. They were: Aaron Levensaler was born on 30 May 1801; Moses W. Levensaler was born on 22 February 1804; Absalom Levensaler was born on 27 June 1806; Mary Leanora Levensaler was born on 08 March 1809; John Adam Levensaler was born on 23 March 1812; Cyrus Levensaler was born on 08 November 1814; Hector Brown Levensaler was born on 12 April 1817; Henry Levensaler was born on 25 March 1820; Harriet Alamanda Levensaler was born on 04 April 1822; and Washington Levensaler was born on 14 May 1825. All the children were born in Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine.

John married Elcey Benner on 22 June 1839 in Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine. Elcey and John had six children. They were: Alonzo Levensaler was born on 15 August 1841; Myron Levensaler was born on 01 May 1842; Orris Levensaler was born on 15 February 1844; Azro Levensaler was born on 10 September 1846; Susan A. Levensaler was born on 24 July 1850; and Florance Levensaler was born on 23 September 1857. All the children were born in Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine.

Note: in 1850 John built an 82 ton schooner which he named "Orbit" It was a broad bea,ed schooner of the coaster class. The schooner put in four years of service hauling lumber and lime until she wrecked in a storm off Point Alderton in Hull, Massachusetts on 18 April 1854.
