Carl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal was born on 23 May 1848 in Anklam, Provinz Pommern[1]. He was the son of Carl Lilienthal and Wilhelmine Pohle.

Otto died in Berlin on 10 August 1896, and was buried in Friedhof Lankwitz[2].

  • built gliders and gathered data[3] that the Wright Brothers eventually used, crediting him as a major inspiration[4]
  • 1896 died from a broken neck a day after losing control of his glider[4]
