Biography

Thomas was baptized in Hardingham, Norfolk, England, 7 November 1603, "Thomas filius Edwardi Lyncolne et Birgittae uxoris eius Batpiz: --- septimo die Novembris [1603]."[1] He was the son of Edward and Bridget (Gilman) Lincoln [2][3] (Please see Research Notes regarding discrepancy in published baptism information)

Thomas, styled the "weaver," was a brother of Daniel Lincoln the "husbandman," who died here unmarried, 5 Apr. 1644; and Samuel Lincoln, Sr., who was a younger brother. [4]

Thomas the "weaver" came to New England in 1633 with his "cousin" Nicholas Jacob, and resided for about two years at Watertown and Charlestown.[4] Nicholas was probably his uncle by marriage, to his mother's sister, as he would be a contemporary born about the same time. (Thomas b. 1601 and Jacob b. 1604)

He had a grant of land in Hingham at Weary-all (Otis) Hill in 1635; and July 3, 1636, a house-lot of five acres on the south side of Town (South) Street.[4]

Thomas was twice married.

The christian name of his first wife was Susanna. She died March, 1641.[5][4]
The christain name of his second wife was Mary.[6] She survived him, and died in Hingham 21 Dec. 1683, being then, as the record says, "an aged woman." [4][7]

He died in Hingham 2 Sept. 1675, leaving no children.[4][8]

Last Will & Testament

Undated, but probated 26 Oct 1675, [9]

His will, which is without date, was witnessed by Edmund Pitts and Josiah Loring. It was presented at Boston, 26 Oct. 1675. In that instrument he bequeaths "all my moveables, and land, orchards, gardens, and meadows to Mary Lincoln, my beloved wife. After her decease, Daniel Lincoln, my nephew, and son of my brother Samuel, shall have the house-lot I now dwell upon which was given me by the town of Hingham; also, one half of my salt-meadow at Abraham's well, and one half of my planting lot at Weary-all Hill. To Samuel Lincoln, my nephew, the eldest son of my brother Samuel, the house-lot I formerly purchased of Jarvis Goold, deceased. Also to my brother Samuel a specified sum; and to my other nephews and nieces who are the children of my brother Samuel, viz.: Mary Lincoln, Mordecai Lincoln, Thomas Lincoln, Martha Lincoln, and Sarah Lincoln," sums varying from £5 to £12, each. As no mention is made of Samuel's youngest daughter Rebecca, it is more than prob. that the will was made before her birth.[4]

On 19 July 1680, widow Mary Liincoln joined with her husband' other heirs to sell her part of the thirty acre lot "lately granted to Thomas Lyncolne late of said Hingham weaver now eceased and to Samuel Lyncoln Senr of the said Hingham and brother to the said Thomas Lyncoln".[10]

Research Notes

  • Update to Baptism: The Great Migration Begins gives the date of Thomas Lincoln's baptism as 27 November 1601 in Hingham, citing TAG 11:193, which in turn cites Banks, "The Emigrant Ancestor and Ancestress of Abraham Lincoln as its source. Banks actually gives the baptism as 27 November 1601 but in Hardingham, not Hingham. Reviewing the original parish registers reveals the date to be 7 November 1603 in Hardingham. Unless there is an objection, I plan to update Thomas' birth data.

According to the research of Charles Edward Banks, Thomas Lincoln was baptized at Hardingham, Norfolk, England, 27 November 1601 (not Hingham). See Charles Edward Banks, "The Emigrant Ancestor and Ancestress of Abraham Lincoln," New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 60 (1929):115-117 at 116; digital images via FamilySearch Catalog, DGS 8131626, images 1131-1132 of 1355.

Is there any reason this information should not be updated? --Gene

The TAG article is shown as the source for his parents. I have not yet reviewed it but perhaps it has additional detail on his birthplace

Hi Sharon,

The TAG article only referenced back to Banks' work. By subscription, AmericanAncestors.

Believe Ames reprinted Torrey's article, so also Constance LeNeve Gilman Ames, The Story of the Gilmans and a Gilman Genealogy (Yakima, Washington: Shields Ranier Printing Co., 1950), 36-37; digital images, Hathi Trust, includes sections, Clarence A. Torrey, "The Lincoln-Gilman Ancestry," and "Corrected Ancestry of Edward the Emigrant as stated by Mr. Clarence Torrey, Genealogist, Dorchester, Mass."

With Ann Browning and Jo Fitz-Henry, we have identified the baptismal record at Hardingham, but our collaboration indicates the date as "septimo" Novembris 1603, so 7 November 1603.

Thanks to the some sharp English Project eyes, "Thomas filius Edwardi Lyncolne et Birgittae uxoris eius Batpiz: --- septimo die Novembris [1603]." See "England, Norfolk, Parish Registers (County Record Office), 1510-1997," Record Office, Norwich.; images, FamilySearch, FHL Digital Collection, DGS 004033226, image 18 of 1975 (or England, Norfolk, Parish ...Record Office), 1510-1997, Hardingham, Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, 13 of 133).

The way it is worded in Banks' article, it was his original research, "In the parish records of Hardingham I found the record of baptism 27 November, 1601, of Thomas, son Edward and Bridget Lincoln..." Seems good enough to base the update on.
