Biography

Scottish flag
Christian (Lindsay) Auchinleck was born in Scotland.

Christian was the daughter of Alexander, Earl of Crawford, and his wife Marjory Dunbar.

1st Marriage

About 1418 she married Sir William Douglas of Lochleven[1] as his second or later wife and (unusual for that period) for the rest of her life was known as Christian Douglas.

Sir William Douglas and Christian had a daughter:

  1. Elizabeth married Sir Richard Lovell of Ballumbie in 1438.

Alexander earl of Crawford made a gift to his "neptis" Elizabeth Douglas and her spouse the laird of Ballumbie in August 1438. [2]

Sir William died in France in 1421.

2nd Marriage

As Christian Douglas, widow of Sir William Douglas she contracted to marry secondly in early Feb 1423/24 to David Wemyss of that Ilk. [1][3] James Douglas of Ralston, her step-son, was one of the witnesses to the contract. In an obligation to his intended spouse. Christian Douglas, regarding her terce, David made provision against the possibility of his decease before he had been infeft in his mother's lands, by giving his future wife a liferent annuity of £40.[3]

Having married by the 4th Feb 1423/24, David Wemyss and Dame Christian received a charter from Henry Wardlaw, bishop of St. Andrews, granting to them and their heirs the lands of Methil, in which they were conjunctly infeft. [4] They took sasine of Methil two days later,

David Wemyss and Christian had a son and daughter:

  • John his heir to Wemyss
  • Euphemia contracted in 1443[5] to wed David Ogilvy but did not take place.

David Wemyss died about 1430, before September.

On 30 Dec 1430 a crown charter granted to James Douglas, son of deceased Sir William Douglas of Lochleven, of the lands of Ralston, in the barony of Cunningham and sheriffdom of Ayr, which pertained to Christiana Douglas in conjunct-fee and were resigned by her.[6] This James Douglas, her stepson, had witnessed her contract of marriage to David Wemyss in 1424.

3rd Marriage

Christian married thirdly, before 1443, to Sir James Auchinleck of Auchinleck as his last wife. [7]

On their marriage it appears that Sir James took on the role of tutor to her Wemyss children. On 22 July 1443 he was instrumental in arranging a preliminary contract of marriage for her daughter Euphemia to wed David Ogilvy the son of Sr Andrew Ogilvy of Inchmartine within 40 days or to pay a penalty. Her step-son James Douglas of Ralston was a witness.[5]

At Edinburgh, on 17 November 1458 in the tenement of John Butlar, and in the dwelling-house of Robert Dee a transumpt was made of the 1430 Charter to James Douglas. The seals of Christian, relict of Sir James Auchinleck, John Wemyss of that ilk, her son, and William Auchinleck of Bellsbank were appended.[8]

On 22 May 1465 her son, Sir John Wemyss of that Ilk, was granted sasine of the lands of Methill which Christian freely resigned.[9] She had been granted conjunct infeftment of Methil with David Wemyss in 1424 as part of her marriage agreement.

Christian was wife to James Auchinleck not John. She would be step-mother to John.
